Post subject:  Cutting a gear stick??

Hey all, after checking out 72Clubmans pics and noticeing his little gear stick i was wondering if there is any reason as to why you cant cut one down. I have long ass legs and even though my seat is back, the gear lever still hits my legs when in third, so i was thinking i might cut it down, maybe not as short as 72clubmans, but definatly shorter than it is now!! Is it a roadworthy issue or does it make changing gears easier/harder??

If you're keeping the rod change box I'd cut a few inches off the stick, then heat & bend it if you have to. My son's Clubbie has a cut down one, and it feels really good. After I flung the rotten shift steady rod rubber and made a lurethane one..

i have a cut down stick and I think its fine.... the only problem, being long legged myself, is that i have to reach forward to change gears, as in i have to move my torso to get to the stick....

thats a real pain when in traffic... otherwise it would be fine....

It definitly shortens the shift and is a good thing. I cut one and then bent it like doc an another car and it was great. Beats spending money an a quick shift.

In Kermit years ago - I put a "S" bend in my rod change gearstick. Shortened it's hight so got the short shift effect, but also shifted the head of the stick back a couple of inches so that you didn't need to reach as far forward to grab the stick.

Worked for me for about 5 years in that car.

Is there really much difference between a cut-down stick and a quick shift?

if the gearstick is floppy when its full size,it is eaven worse when you cut it down,i myself dont like it only because iv seen the light for remote change.
