Hello all.

I've got a Smiths 10K RPM tacho which I currently have taped to the steering column with some a PVC pipe elbow covering it.

Where have you mounted your tacho?

Has anyone mounted it on the steering column?

I have a deluxe with the wood dash and I don't want to mount it inside the door of the drivers side glovebox. Steering column seems the best place as I can see it easily.

yep, mine was on the steering coloum too, BINI style

European Bini style... The aussie ones have the tacho in the middle and the speedo on the steering column. Wish we had the European style one, like old skool Mini's!

What do you need a tacho for anyway? Can't you drive or something? (that should fire this thread up!)

If you want to see how fast you are actually going... as distinct from the wildly variable and usually optimistic Mini speedo..

Of course, this presupposes that you know the diff ratio, or more particularly actual MPH/1000 rpm..

You can then hone your mental arithmetic skills whilst driving...!

I was talking to a mate (yes I have one!) and he was the fastest mini in qualifying at Bathurst in 1968 and I asked him if he had a tacho and he said No! They didn't bother! They didn't want to carry any extra weight!

They had the little orange lines on the S speedo....1,..11,..111, and then just went a bit further... !:shock:

I had a friend in R&D at the BMC Zetland plant back then- he said all the S race motors for the `66 race were `run in' (actually `lapped in') on an engine dyno by motoring it electrically with warm oil and water, but no fuel, for I can't remember how many hours.

Not sure if it's an urban myth, he sounded fair dinkum at the time.

mine WAS in the middle of the dash. the next one i have i will have lower, so theives cant see it....

Get a Fiat tacho- nobody will pinch it!

Mine is mounted right on top of the steering column (as opposed to on the LHS as you quite often see). It has two bolt holes, one of them lines up with the standard upper column shroud mount. Easy to mount, and is located right in front of you, since it's the most important guage!



When you are actually sitting in the car you can in fact see all of the guage, it's not blocked off like in the photo (on the other hand, only seeing from 2000 - 6000rpm isn't necessarily a problem).

I'm not so concerned about people flogging it, hopefully they wont bother stealing a $50 tacho from Super Cheap, but you never know. Touch wood.

If I was to build a nice real wooden dash with offset gauges (NO, I'm not..) I would fit a full set of Fiat 124 coupe gauges. Veglia Borletti, nice black surrounds..

If they are for the right price maybe but I think I have collated the dials except for a volt's dial and a Tacho which Sue does not want
