| Post subject: | inlet manifolds |
Hey all, Well I am slowly working on my van still and was wanting to ask peoples thought on Inlet manifolds. My engine bay is below. This one annoys me as you have to rip the whole manifold off to touch the carb and it means the carb is about a foot from me when I am driving (exaggerate much david?). What would give the best performance and be a bit shorter? It has a k&n filter on

A well ported redline/warneford 3.5inch 2005 intake will do OK and is a good alternative. However by the looks of the length of your K&N, it will still be quite long as you probably only save 1.5inches. You can also do this: cut the intake manifold flange so that you can just undo the 4 inner manifold bolts slightly (not all off) and lift the whole carb and intake off. I can remove my dellorto in about 2 mins flat, while taking time to sip a beer. IMO keep your current setup. The longer intakes do better for performance and are worth it. All the way or no way!! PS. Check my setup, I made the box bigger so it's easier to access.

Graham says the Redline 3005 is good up to about 120HP or so when ported, and it's a lot shorter than what you have. 
But as you have a Weber box already I would go for one of Graham's 5" ones (same as lillee has) it's an inch or two shorter than yours. |

It looks like you have the long neck redline one. Redline also do a slightly shorter one (3005 I think the code is), which ported can give a reasonable level of performance, but it is not going to out perform the longer necked version or the Graham Russell version. That's why so many guys build weber boxes into the firewall. If you really want it short, you could go for a lynx swan neck manifold - rumour has it you will go backwards in performance over a std carb

The swan neck flows reasonably well considering all the negatives said about it - there are worse ones about - not many - but there are. I ran my swan neck for a while to get the Warneford(RL 3005 derivative)ported. I saw a little down low missing but once the engine revs went up it was all good. GR even tesed them and said they were ok in a small block. I like them as you can shoe horn a better filter into your mini and have a bit of room. Hooroo |

thanks all. What is going on with the posts at the moment. They are all out of order. I might just stop being a girl, add some more sound deadening behind the dash and see how that goes for now. Thanks again. David |

If sound is your problem then a sidedraft of any sort is not the answer. They are just noisy full stop. I am about to conver to an SU for that exact reason... |

After driving the wife's Mini about for 10 months now with twin HS4s, I can't wait to get behind my 1360 with its 45DHLA Dellorto again. It's not `noise' Chong, it's music!

Reverend Kev - I am missing the sound big time - 18 months and still mini-less. I think I need to supply some serious amber fluid coupled to some righteous snags and rissoles for a working week-end(I am too lazy at the moment to do it!!) Ahhh the sound of sidedraught heaven and the smell of petrol in the cabin - gee I miss it!!

Here's a few pics of GR's 5" Weber manifold. I had one on my 1360 briefly but was not prepared to hack the firewall for a Weber box so a filter would fit, I sold it to Gafmo and went back to my ported Redline 3005.
Note- those restrictors in the intake runners are there for a reason, grind them out and you LOSE power and torque.

I can't see that a manifold an inch or 2 shorter will make it much less noisy. Maybe try some sound deadener on the inside of the dash, Dynamat or similar. Pete |
