just was browsing the net to see if i could find any alternative carburation on the a-series engine. this is the only one i could find , but anyone heard of other carbies? i was thinking maybe a harley would be a good option? http://www.theminiforum.co.uk/forums/in ... 39131&st=0 ![]() |

I've heard of webers being fitted to harleys! Fish and Mikuni's I think were popular mods back when. KB |

I reckon they'd be a great option if you feel up to giving it a go. An extra 60 years of development have gone into motorbike carburettors, it's be great to see all that R&D harnessed. |

My 1058 had twin 1-3/16" Amal Monobloc carbs, they were good. But... throttles used to stick at idle then you either stalled it or left in a cloud of tyre smoke... ![]() |

What about the Keihn(?) carbs, I've seen them used as a kind of quad throttle arangement on a lot of engines... ![]() |

I have quite a few sets of late model bike carbd sets that i`m playing with at the moment, some XJ1200 carbs, a set of YZFR1 carbs, etc etc etc & have been toying with the idea of doing exactly the sdame as the ones in that photo, except that i`d space them out so it`s a straight line into the cyl head & not bunched up like the ones in the pic Yeah, easy-peasy ![]() |

What about "Jetting" a motorcycle carb Matt? The bike carbs are pretty well set for a single use fitment (for example the R1 carbs are for a 998cc, 20 valve 12000 RPM fire breather). How do you change the "needle" and mixture in these typs of carbs to suit the agricultural engines (by comparison) we use in our minis?. I've never fiddled with them but don't imagine they would be quite as universal in their fitment as an SU might be. |

I got an HIF6 that was on a Harley off eBay and a little chrome 'Y' manifold for it too. It had an odd, little, one way valve on the side that you could pump. ![]() I'm not sure if I still have it, I used a bunch of HIF6 and some HIF44s to make thew one on my car at the moment. (slightly off topic) - Just recently I bought a pair of HIF44Es The E stands for electronic. The bloke who sold them to me told me they were injection carbies, like they weren't carbies anymore. I knew that was totally untrue when I pulled them off the shelf and saw a set of needles in them. Basically I got a set of HIF44s cheap. They can be converted to manual choke and all, but it would a shame to waste the intricate choke and stepper motor system. |

That would be similar to what is on my Austin Montego. The stepper motor runs the choke via computer depending on air temp, motor temp and other things. The computer is dead on mine! So I pulled apart the stepper motor and use the choke manually. The computer also runs a fuel shut off on over-run so that when you lift the foot is does not use any fuel.
The downside was the Lucas computer. ![]() |

I bought them more as an oddity rather than anything else and upon researching I found that Burlen make a manual choke kit (I think I'll make it myself though, it looks simple) and the carbie can be used as any other HIF44. I now have 2 spare ball bearing suction chambers (for lack of a better term) and lots of spare bits, or 2 complet HIF44s. The anti-run-off cut off system is the best feature. I don't think it is possible to make work, well not easily anyway but definitely a good idea. Maybe in my 2nd year of uni, after completing some electronic engineering subjects I might be able to do something with them....or not. |
