When i turn left or right sometimes i get this funny sound. I think i had a thread of it a while ago, but anyway, its the drum brake back plate scraping against the drum. Is this bad? what do I do?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Check the rear wheel bearings by jacking up the back of the car and shaking to check for any play. Do this with the handbrake OFF or you will be wasting your time.

You can try tightening up the rear stub axle nut, but you will probably need to change a wheel bearing.

Also check the tyre isn't scraping on the rear shock absorber while you're there.

its the front brakes by the way. (My car has drums up front) When i took off the drums i could see where it had been scraping, along the top and bottom.

Yeah, same rules apply then (except for the handbrake).

Tightening up the CV nut will be a little more important this time however.

Still if you feel bearing movement after that, think about picking up a wheel bearing and some grease for some fun and games over Christmas.

It's a job I actually can really get into on minis...must be all the grease and brake dust involved.. :wink:

what i`d do is---> firstly chack that the big flat washer that`s under the castlated centre nut is fitted the right way around, (with the inner chamfer facing inwards towards the car) & if it isn`t, then swap it around so it is,,,, then re-tighten the castelated nut up , check for wheel bearing play/movement & if it feels good go drive it again to see if the noise is still there. If there is still play in the wheel brgs & the scraping noise is still there then i`d be ripping the wheel brgs out & replacing them. --> & if that is the case i would check the drive flange for any signs of wear while you have the bearings out.

If you`re unsure of any &/or all of that crap that i just typed then you should see a mini specialist to recify the problem for you.

It's a sooner rather than later job really.

Bearing kit is about 50 to 60 bucks, but it will cost you nothing if it is simply a loose nut or reversed washer at fault. Leave it till later to find that same fault and the bearings will be ruined into the bargain.

ok i took apart the drum brake and checked the spacer its the right way around. There is alot of movement in the wheel when moving the drive flange around. That doesnt seem too good. Looks like ill have my birthday present a day early :lol:

Prove whether it is the flange or the bearing by wiggling around and noting if the CV on the other side of the hub moves with it.

Looks like the bearing collapsed some time ago...oops...

No difference in the hub, It'll come across fine..

Flange is f*cked! :lol:

Make sure the outer races haven't spun in the hub too, if they are still hard to tap out, you will probably be right with just a new (better) flange and new bearings.

At least you can still buy new drive flanges for drum brakes (Karcraft has em).
Good thing it's not 997/997 Cooper discs, theirs are NLA. :cry:

Thanks for the help, I got a new flange from our 850 half cut, getting a new bearing kit tomorrow morning. Hopefully the other side hasnt broken, what are the chances? Can you tell me how much a new flange is, im just curious
