Hey all I don’t know much about diffs, thought I would ask here to learn a little bit about them! What types of diffs are available for minis? Are they all interchangeable? eg: 998cc diff into a 1275 and vice versa? What kind of power / torque can a mini diff take? That’s all for now, but im sure ill think of something else soon. Thanks everyone. |

I only know of 2 types of factory diffs, A and A+, both are single pin diffs. In terms of ratios there are all sorts of ratios. The higher the ratio, the more revs you need to to achieve top speed. ie. 3.4 needs to rev alot higher at 110km/h than 2.9 etc. Then there are re-engineered diffs like locked diffs, limited slip and cross pin diffs. Both are worth lots of $$$ How much power: depends on who you ask, but if you drive sensibly and never spin wheels, then the diff will never really need to work... Me on 120hp I run a 3.44 modified A series diff, rebuilt. |

Whilst all stock Mini diffs are much the same except for ratio variations, there are 3 different output shafts in them- rubber U/J, Hardy Spicer U/J (Cooper S) and pot joint (rodchange Clubbies). You can swap these shafts to suit what driveshafts you have. These days I prefer pot joints for road cars- they absorb less power than Hardy Spicers and don't fall to bits like the rubber joints do. Hardy Spicers will take a bit more power so the racers prefer them. ![]() |

What is it going into? Im running pot joint diff in mine. If I ever blow it/break it, ill get a quaife I think... or one from the guy in melbourne that makes em. Some aftermarket ones need mods... |

I run Hardy Spicer cause the engine is easier to remove. for my street cars I always use Pot Joints. I doubt you would break a pot joint unless it was worn out. Daniel |
