Hi everybody!

Today I found out, that there realy was an DIESEL A-Series, made in the 60s.
It was build for the "Nuffield BMC Mini Tractor" or "BMC 6/16". a smal, light tractor. Based on the 950cc unit. As data varies, it must have something between 16 and 22HP.

The head is verry different, the sparkplugs have been replaced with big injectors, below them heaterplugs. The valves are nearly even to the block's surface. The injection-pump is direktely driven by a chain from the crank.

Here's a direkt comparison to petrol- and diesel-engine; both were available for the 6/16:

And here some other drawing from an 6/16 repair-manual:

Has anyone ever heard of this engine?
everything indicates it realy is an A-Series - but I still have of no confirmation it REALY is an A-Series. I wasted the whole day to find informations. It's so damn interesting! :D

Could be, someday we'll see an A-Series TDI-Mayfair or something like tis.

Cheers,
Jan

Yes it was a real tractor I used to sit on them here at shows back in the 60s.
Matt Read `TheMiniMan' has an original parts book.

Workshop manual download here- http://www.instruction-manuals.co.uk/ca ... CminiT.htm

Actually that's a really good question: "Is it an A series?".

If the answer is no, because the head and induction etc is (part of) what makes it A series.....then by the same logic an overhead cam head on a mini engine is even less of an A series

I've got pix of one. There was one at this years Geelong show.

I've also seen a Morry Minor with the head fitted. It was turbo, too! 8)

Cold you please e-mail me the pictures?
e-mail is: strassenbelag[at]gmx.net

Yes, I thought that'l be the perfekt head for any injektion-conversation! 1 injetor each port. Perfekt!

I also would like the idea of a dirty, mean and horribly slow Diesel-mini :D
(2750rpm makes about 95km/h w. 13" wheels and 2,75 final - )

Cheers,
Jan

A stock 948 diesel wouldn't have enough power to get out of the way when the lights changed..

Smac yes it IS an A series, sort of.... with a few `additions'.

I wonder how long their cranks lasted............. :?

<edit> typo

On the drawings you can see the head is flat. Therefore you would dish the pistons to suit.

Flat top pistons and smaller chambers in the head. Notice also that the rear engine plate seems to have a section that bolts to the head. You'd be wanting decent head studs.

The design is called `indirect injection', note the small pre-combustion chambers in the head below the injectors, and the constricted passage into the main chamber in the piston crown.

the Minor.... was running bio diesel, I'm told that the entire floor at the back has a fuel tank built into it, apparently the Morris Minor Centre in Melbourne had something to do with it - there were other details like performance and economy, but I forget.

Apparently Henry Draper from Melbourne has a pair of the actual tractors

It'd be way cool to put one in a Mini.

@simon:
Many thanks!
That thing is soooo damn cool! :D:D Love it!
Looks all stock, somehow... And if you consider Rover to be the first introducing an stock turbo-diesel - it`s a real herald! :)

Here are some other views of head & piston:
