Post subject: | Weber Air filter Mod Hiclone Idea |
Well im a n00b with engines! But skilled in the arts of exciting ideas. I have a Weber 40DCOE on my 1100cc and i was wondering if it is possible to run a pipe air intake with a Hiclone filter that uses the windforce through the front grill. basically fit a hiclone to a Weber. I would design a mold that is flush with the old filter shape and change the direction towards the direct airflow. Constructive criticism welcome i want to learn. |

I remember the Australian online performance magazine (who's name escapes me) tested Hi-Clone in a number of different car applications. They found that the (very slight) benefits of the hiclone were there for some vehicles, and not for others. Rifling the airflow has benefits, but if it is upset by something in the path then it is all for naught. What you propose has a long unimpeded tube with a hiclone at the front, so there may be benefits, but I don't think that it might be worth it really. How many production vehicles (where performance and noise reduction is really important) have these fitted? Saying that, nothing wrong with a cold air intake if you like... |

That might work with fuel injection but with a carb it just buggers up the carb's mixture control. Usually if you want cool air to a Weber you run a hose from front grille up near to, but not attached to the carb. |

Well i think i may just go the pipe intake idea and pump out cold air in front of the filter. Or maybe a small scoop. Cheers anyway oneday when i can risk a possibly expensive idea without certain results i will. Im in a funny situation actually. Im saving to go to europe with my girlfriend and restoring my mini. so i work extra for mini and the rest for europe. sadly people dont understand why i dont just wait untill i get back. But i tried saying no to my addiction, alas i find too many "Perfectly understandable"justifications.. You can turn your back on a person, but you can never turn your back on a Mini Im in a very good job and earn 600+ weekly without fail i have to save 6000 to leave mid nxt year and pay no rent and no bills. So just make me feel somewhat less guilty....hehe ![]() |

You can sleep in a mini, but you can't drive a house.... ![]() |

What is the temperature of the air coming in the grille? What is the air pressure of the air coming in the grille? What is the temperature of the air at the carby? What is the air pressure of the air at the carby? Have you ever heard of carby ice? What makes you think that the air coming into the carby can be improved? ![]() |

Well didnt really think of that. Within a week the filter gets dirty and filled with petrol, my engine runs rich and i loose power. I want more power and i thought increase airspeed would improve combustion. I want more power without supercharging or turbo ( P lisence) |

If you want to increase airflow you open the throttle. ![]() If your air filter fills with petrol and dirt within a week you have a problem. |

My mechanic says its running to rich but he refuses to attemp tuning, apparently one needs and enormous amount of parts to get the best economy performance ratio |

Find a new mechanic! Dont run an intake pipe ... useless on a mini really. The air temp at the carb mouth and right in front of the grille is the same. If you have the filter clogging up with dirt every week, you probably have a very poor flowing air filter. There are probably better filters that will help... Dont over oil the filter!!! It dont work so good that way. More power is not as simple as more air... find a good mechanic that will tune it for you properly. That might make more power if your tune is off at the moment. How do you know its running rich? Peter. |

Well firstly the petrol smell gets stronger the filter gets soaked in petrol and less air gets in the mix so i have worse acceleration. Plus my exhaust mechanic thinks its rich.I may ask him he has a Torana V8 with 3Carbies he may be tuning savvy |

You will get more power from a set of stub stacks or ramtubes on the weber and a longer intake manifold. These are proven power gain modifications. Cold air raming etc is a theory at best... |

Hi, As others have said sort out the basic running problems first, then worry about bolt-on performance parts. Vizard tried a similar idea and found there was a torque benefit in a long intake pipe with a K & N filter down behind the grille. See "Tuning BL's A Series Engine" for details. But Vizard wasn't intending to "ram in" air, just suck in cooler air. Cheers, |
