i've noticed that the alternator actually pushes air away from the radiator. i was wondering if anyone has ever modified the fan on the alternator to pull air through it and toward the radiator?

i'm thinking of getting a cheap on and doing some tinkering (next year)

take off the old fan replace with on that has just angled rotors (not the cut into air thing it has at the moment), place it in a cylindricle casing so that is forms a vacuum through the alternator and doesn't just pull air from beside the alternator.

Or if if you could get a later style alternator with the inbuilt fan. I have an N15 Pulsar one on my car, rated at 70amp (as opposed to the 34 on the ol' Lucas).

I know it's not as fun as playing around with your ideas, but there is some work in installing, as you have to grind away some of the alternator and modify the wiring.

But hey all up to you.

I would say the fan on the alternator is negligeable. If you think that the alternator fan is adding to your under bonnet heat then you may have bigger problems that just a wrong-direction alternator fan.

At speed, the fans are negligeable and the wind running under, through and around the bay cools the engine...

i'm more concerned with doing long trips and the engine running at a constant higher rpm then suddenly slowing and the air flow slowing as entering towns and the heat builds up and the temp goes up.

wondering if extra airflow at this stage would then help?



does this work well? any troubles? has anyone else done this?

If your car is getting hot it is not because of the alternator fan.
Stop looking for silly things and get the radiator cleaned.

If you're worried about extra cooling, go get a cheap thermatic fan from Supercrap, fit that underneath the left guard and get a rubber seal to seal the radiator to the cowling. Wire it up to a switch in the car so you can turn the additional cooling on when the car's getting too hot.

she isn't getting to hot.

i am mealy looking for ways in which airflow may be increased and i noticed that the fan on alternator pushes air the opposite way.
i had wondered if anyone had changed this? if it would make much difference? and how hard it would be.

It will make basically no difference whatsoever at road speed, and very little if any idling at standstill.
