Post subject: | Exhaust/ Inlet manifold questions |
Hey, Im looking into upgrading my exhaust and i have a spare manifold. If i cut the exhaust part off, and get extractors, will there be enough clearance between the 2 intakes and middle extractor pipe? thanks |

Yes though there is a BUT involved .... Some extractors can hit the bottom of the half manifold so check first with the supplier . you can give it a hit with a ball pein hammer to make them fit but it's a bit rough with new extractors . |

Thanks for the super fast reply!! So what is an alternative that wont cost too much? This is my choice because i want to use the existing 1-1/4" carb, Do you think this is a good idea? or should i go and find a 1-1/2" and a proper manifold? I sort of want to stick to the 1-1/4 though..... You said some extractors, do you know if the maniflow ones from minisport do? Thanks |

I don't know the specifics I'm afraid so will leave it for the doc or someone that's fitted them to answer . |

There are usually lots of these cut off manifolds lying around in peoples junk collections, replacing the exhaust is one of the oldest mods that have been performed on a mini. There will probably be more 1.5 inch manifolds lying around than 1.25's, but there will be a few out there if you throw something up in the wanted room for a couple of dollars. Other than that, you can hacksaw off the inlet portion of the manifold and grind the remainder back, but be careful as you can grind through into the inlet passage and reduce it to scrap. Not hard to do however, just pay attention to what you are doing. |

If you are on the market for some extractors to use with a cut down inlet manifold, I would advise you stay clear of Maniflow LCBs as even with the aid of a BFH the inlet manifold probably won't fit. The Perry brand extractors that are available (three into ones) are a better bet as the centre pipe is closer to the engine, you may not have to modify them at all to get the inlet manifold to fit. ![]() http://classicmotoring.net.au/cmos/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_91&products_id=434 |

But are they as good as the maniflows or LCB? I should really be getting a 1.5 with proper manifold because logically getting the full exhaust would be pointless with a 1.25" carb...wouldnt it? What about any places in Adelaide that make exhausts? My budget is around $500, for extractors, 1.5" on manifold, pipe, muffler. |

thats a pretty big budget... A minispares inlet manifold will cost around $140, Steve has a whole bunch of second hand lcb's. worst case senario you are left with 250 to buy a sports pipe and a 1.5 SU. I brought a 1.75 and a bunch of parts for 50$. Maniflows are the best, and thats what you pay. For a fairly stock motor, LCB or 3-1 would be equally good. |

minicraft in WA have a full sports exhaust (extractors, pipes, muffler) for $320, $180 left over for a decent manifold and 1.5 in carby. stacks of those around. Easy |

I saw your add in the wanted section so I went to my shed to see what I had lying around. I do have a HS4 on a cut-off manifold that fit with my unknown brand, Aussie LCBs that came on my 850. But it looks dodgy (plus the carby is missing a lot of bit becasue I've flogged them to complete other carbies) A set of twin 1 1/4s are fun and look good, and a trip to an SU competant dyno tuner should set them up great. But can be costly, Expect $150-$300 depending on condition. But for simplicity, a good performance manifold (although costly, over a $100 new), with a properly set-up 1 1/2 with a good set of LCBs or 3 into 1 (I hate these, but they may be good on a smallbore) or contact Graham Russell as he makes, or did at least, funky manifolds, is the way to go. |

As said, forget the Maniflow LCB if using a cut inlet manifold. If you want an LCB not 3-1 freeflow, a Perry LCB will fit, if they are still available. I've not bought one for years so I don't know.. <edit> typo |

The Perry style LCB is still available, not sure if it's made by Perry but otherwise the same (double slip joint half way down). Also bear in mind LCBs often don't fit if you have rubber cross uni joints, which you probably have if your car has a 1.25" SU. The Perry three into ones pictured are fine for a small bore and I doubt you will see a difference going to full on LCBs, but it may be worth considering if you are planning a bigger engine in the future. Personally if I was in your position I would fit the three into ones with a decent exhaust (RC40 single box), and use the 1.25" SU on a cutdown manifold. Once you've done that, convert to a 1.5" or twins later on. The exhaust is going to make the bigger difference, and when you get bored with the power, fit a bigger carb. |
