Would it be worth investigating the possibility of putting a toyota echo 1.3 or 1.5 motor in a mini? they look like a fairly compact motor. heres a pic here http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/488235
Not sure how much a half cut would be though. What do people think?

Were are you Sweep?

If you were going to go through with a conversion you would (IMO) do it with a worthwhile engine. All the Echos I have been in have been nothing short of disappointing. Couldn't pull a fairys foreskin.

I'll be in melb next year. Year the 1.3 is supposed to be gutless, the 1.5 looks better and there are turbo conversions for them. http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/303898/1
CAPA also do a supercharged conversion for like 5500 which is a bit pricey i think. I just think they are a fairly modern motor and would have potential if turboed or S/C. They might still be too pricey though as a halfcut. worth investigating though i think.

Those echo motors look fabulous...would like very nice under a Mini bonnet....if a 4efte fits then why not?

If you going to fit the 4EFE and turbo/supercharge it why not just fit the 4EFTE? You can get a front cut for under $2k.

cause we're talking about the echo motor and turbo/SC it, not the starlet motor. Echo has the 1NZ-FE motor not the 4EFE.

What is so great about the Echo motor? It looks bigger than the Starlet, so I doubt it would easily fit in a Mini..

we have a '99 echo 1.5 vvti. it goes okay, but its a pretty big engine. they dont put out a lot of power but id say they are quite reliable. if you could fit one of these why not try fit the VTEC, i dont think they are that different in size. (the 1.5 that is).

or go the 1.3 k3-VE from a Sirion GTVI. they go pretty well and are a bit smaller. or import a 1.3 K3-VET (turbo). The UK also has awd versions of the sirion.. theres lots of variations to try :)

I was driving back from melbourne yesterday and thinking about this... my wife's friend has an Echo, dunno if it's 1.3 or 1.5, but the body is big, so that'd make it a poor performer compared to when the motor is in a mini. I reckon there are a heap of engines about we could try and fit. What about a hyundai excel twin cam 1500, there must be thousands of motors sitting in wreckers around the country now from cars that have had everything else except the motor fall off them. They are a mitsubishi motor, aren't they? Someone also posted about Barinas in the discussion about swift motors - there must be a heap of them about too..... finding a good 2nd hand motor for $500 should be easy, adding a grand worth of turbo mods and make a screamer, blow it up and spend another $500..... imagine the choice we'll have for locally delivered motors in another 10 years as the current set of buzz boxes fall apart - the new colts are supposed to be pretty good, daewoo matiz, even the hybrids - I was looking at a daihatsu terios too..... I like the idea of locally delivered motors cos service parts are easy to get - I know of someone with an import motor in his subaru and he can't even get head gaskets :?

I really think that in a few years time they're gonna start pushing us off the road, hitting modern engines may be our only way to keep these little beasties running

ROTARY! ROTARY! ROTARY!

But seriously, the 1.3 echo is abit of a dissapointment to me, I'd look into a Jazz engine if it in your budget... it has abit more oomf

I wouldnt touch an echo. If you want something small and potent, with a bit of a difference id prob try the Daihatsu stable as suggested above.

If not the sirion any of the charade motors with a turbo on the side go quite nicely!

Yer, I reckon the VTi-S Jazz is the go. 81kw SOHC VTEC. Looks nice and compact and goes well.

Even better if it was the 7 speed CVT sequential shift auto. :D
