Just curious, are the 998 and 1098 blocks the same thing with the only difference being the 1098 has the long stroke?
Can you simply stroke the 998 crank or is it a different crank, rod and pistion set up?
Basicly what I want to know is can you simply swap the internals (crank, rods, pistons, cam etc)and head to make a 998 into a 1098?

Yep...believe so...just swap the crank, rods, pistons over. Do a search for the Russell Engineering project small bore...interesting reading.

Rods and block are the same. All you need to swap are a 1098 crank and pistons.
The 1098 pistons have the gudgeon pin higher up to allow for the extra stroke.
If bores are worn at all, do it properly- rebore it for oversize pistons.

Lots of 998s out there seem to have a 1098 crank and rods in em by now. I have 3 like this!!

What about the heads, are they the same?
And what would happen if you ran 998 pistons in a 1098 (with standard rods and crank) and vis versa? I assume the 998 pistions may foul on the head in the 1098 and would the 1098 pistions in a 998 lower the compresion..... maybe a dodgy way of lowering the comp for a forced induction 998 :? :)

the heads are exactly the same on both 998 and 1098..

yes if you ran a 1098 crank with 998 pistons the pistons would be coming out the top of the block.. but running a 998 with 1098 pistons would do the opposite.. not the best way to go about running lower comp ratios tho

now do you know how to recognize the difference in cranks?

1098 head (12G202) has slightly bigger inlet valves and ports. But many are using a common old 998 head still, including 2 of mine.
998 pistons stick up 0.148" higher than 1098 ones (1/2 the stroke difference). Most of these pistons are too thin in the crown to take this much off.
If you put 1098 pistons in a 998 the C/R will be way too low, (probably for a turbo too) also you will have no `squish' effect from the pistons to the head, so poor turbulence. If it was a good mod, people would be doing it. And, they're not.

Yes the 1098 comes out of the engine stamped 10***** No I don't know how to tell the difference, what should I look for.(both engines are still fully assembled)

I thought so, but if I don't ask...

1100 also have a dob of yellow paint on them,
1100 crank pins do not overlap as much..

1100 crank is stamped 12G82.
