Hi. I just replaced the front suspension on my 1970 roundnose. ie:ball joints, rubber bushes, wheel bearings. It's ow making a rumbling grinding noise from the front left. It makes the noise in the straight line and with the wheel on lock. it wasn't doing this before the refit any ideas??? :(

Have another look at the nuts on the end of the drive shafts, if they are not torqued up correctly, this will cause the assemble to rumble.

I think mick means the nut on the CV end, if you pulled it apart to do wheel bearings, what did you torque it back up to?

Did you just tighten the nut as tight as you could? or what? be careful, if you over tightened the CV thread may be cactus :( Not likely if it is the cause of play though...

If you hold the wheel at 12 and 6 and try to wiggle it is there any play/movement?

These are the torque settings:

If Drum Brakes - 60ft/lb
If Disk Brakes - 150ft/lb

8)

<edit> be careful with this because if that nut comes undone, you will probably become a passenger

While i'm here did you torque the ball joints up either??

Hi Andy...make contact with the Mini Club....someone local can come around and have a geek at the problem....I wouldn't drive it like it is

Thanks mick, I will do that. it's driving me nuts at the moment. But thats what happens when you own an individual like a mini. you either love them or you hate them, theres no in between. true? ps. how do you get a picture inserted like you have. I've tried but it says the file size is too big.

If you mean the bearing cup or race as some call it hasn't stayed in the hub then you need to noodle the inside edge of the hub so the cup/race is a tight interference fit, if its loose in the hub then it turn and scrub creating noise.

Basically you get a hammer and punch, then mark the inner of the hub, as you make a punch mark the outer edge of the indent is pushed up, so say do it in 4 places evenly around the inner edge of hub then should be tight. that help??
