I was supposed to have a 45 weber with LCB extractors on my car by now. I got back from a trip to find out it wasn't done because of the carby. I got the carby off a veteran mini racer on ebay who said it was used on a mini until put in storage. It just needed a kit to get it freshened up before use. My mechanic dismantled it to put a kit on and stopped because it "has an extra metering hole drilled into each progression port and now needs a new body". I don't know if thats the correct name for these tiny holes but that is what he said. I can see the tiny holes he is talking about but don't really know what they do and don't know wether to go ahead and risk putting it on or take his advice and get rid of it. I have seen a few different webers and they all have different holes. I drive the car every day so can't mess around for long if it doesn't work. Should I take it to a weber carby specialist? Any opinions? Cheers, Jim.

I don't know much about Webers but those holes look fairly easy to plug up with something like devcon....disassemble the carb to get a smooth finish inside?? :idea: :idea:

I was going to suggest you just fill the `extra' holes with epoxy. Araldite takes to alloy like a duck to water, it's petrol proof, too.
However those holes look butchered, the hole positioning is critical. I'd go for another body...

I wonder how hard it is to get another body? I suppose it is easier to get a whole new weber and sell this one off for bits. At least I will know in future to get things checked before handing over the dollars. :oops:

If bought on Ebay and paid for with paypal then file for a refund.

Buying a "new body" will essentialy mean buying a whole new 45dcoe carb - there aren't really many parts to strip off it that can be easily sold (apart from that whole top alloy section (with a needle housing and the float mounts etc). Or you might save yourself some money and buy a DHLA45 dellorto (same carb essentialy).

The problem I have with returning it is that the bloke who sold it to me reckons there is nothing wrong with it and he thinks I should just put it on and use it. By the sounds of it though I shouldn't.

The number of holes and their position determines the carb's progression from idle jets to main jets, with the state of those holes I doubt it will ever run properly.
I'm with Mike, a Dellorto 45DHLA is just as good as a 45DCOE on a road car, cheaper to buy S/H, looks and sounds the same, and you can still get all parts.
I get my jets etc from www.dellorto.co.uk they get here in a week and are cheaper than buying local.

Offcourse he'll say that - you can't expect him to take a butchered carb back and give you your money willingly. But again if payed with paypal insurance is inbuilt into the purchase (assuming he had a certain feedback rating etc) so make a claim, show them the state of those holes and get a note from your mech saying its damaged.

It seems every single guy with a garage full of old parts to get rid off declare themseves as "old mini racers" so as to gain credibility and premium on the price. Had he known what he was doing he would have never butchered a series of uneven, missmatched holes into the body of the carb where accurate perfect holes could have been drilled instead.

Good advice. In the mean time I need to find another carby. I may have to stick to buying one I can go and look at or have inspected.
