Does anyone know if you can tell if there is a centre oil pickup fitted without dismantling the engine/gearbox?

Like maybe peeking in the sump plug hole?

Yes you can-
Method #1- poke something up thru the drain hole `gently' at about 30* to horizontal. If it goes in 4" or more U got a central pickup in there.
If it touches something closer than that, and then feels spongy to push, that's the stocko oil strainer in the RH corner of the box. No centre pickup.

Method #2- let the oil level (cold) get down to or just below the `add oil' mark, then toss it hard around a roundabout. If the oil pressure drops or the oil light blinks it's got a standard pipe & strainer.
Don't make a habit of this, or the bearings will go away.. ask kazjim....

Thanks Dr

Prolly should have mentioned that the engine is on the floor at the moment. so method #1 is the go.

i would have to stick it in the car to do #2. since it is intended to be the supersprint motor for next year, i need to have the centre oil pickup, but i did not want to pull it apart if not necessary. The car is not registered, so going on the roundabout would have to be a midnight run anyway :)

The other motor sufferred surge on a couple corners at Oran, but is just a stock 998, so i was not too worried about it.

BTW, the other motor is a K 1098 10Y?/Ta/H , and has double valve springs. Are they standard?

Double springs were only standard on Sprite 1098, and I think MG1100 (rare here), with 295 head. Not 1098 Minis, or common Morris 1100 with 202 head.
If it's a 12G295 head then yes they were standard.

I've got one that I might not end up using. The guy who's building my box is pretty busy and won't have time to muck around bending it if it turns out that its blocking reverse.

Hopefully it will go in fine otherwise look out for it in the for sale section

Thanks again Dr. Looks like this motor was modded more than i thought, cos its a 12G202 head, but definitely has double springs. it might already have the centre oil pickup too :D .

Thanks for the offer dewey, but looks like gafmo beat me to it

Bending it is no big deal- only needs a slight twist to miss.

hrm if there's no heating/bending involved I can probably twist his arm to do it.

how much does a centre oil pickup cost? and is it a bitch to fit? that's if the motor is apart (which my a+ is)

i was quoted $800 odd bucks to pull the block of the g/box and inspect all of the g/box install a centre oil pickup and centre main strap.
seems a bit rich

FFS mikey. Who quoted you that!?

Centre pickup is farken easy to fit... even Warren can do one.
Its just two bolts.

Little more to it- after the motor is off you need to undo the big bearing retainer, pull the layshaft out, roll the cluster gear out, remove the old oil pipe and strainer, fit the new pipe and ensure it misses reverse, undo it again, refit cluster & shaft, tighten pipe, etc etc.

Of course, when the old strainer is out and you see all the crud in the bottom of the box, you will want to strip and clean it, won't you..
Does take a while to do properly.
