Hi guys,

I've searched around, read a few things, but I'm still all screwed up in the head about which cam I should use in my engine build. At the moment I have a cam thats around the 298deg mark with .295 lift and 88deg overlap. But.. I think its going to be a bit big to drive every day

Soo I could really use some recommendations from those that have modified their 1100's as to what cam they used, etc. I am after something that will give me good mid and top end to around 6500rpm, without sacrificing driveability.

Heres my planned engine spec so far too --
overbored 1098 with a 12G940 head and 42mm Weber

Your help would be SOOO much appreciated as its beginning to play on my mind...

Cheers guys,
Sam

Thanks so much, that was pretty much my order as well, (apart from the VP3, havent heard much about it) I just needed some confimation.
Anyone got any ideas of how much a RE13 will set me back?

Cheers,
Sam

i think the re-13 is a bit big for daily driving, and the idle is pretty bad so its no good for stop start traffic.
beautiful on the open road or through the twisties.

i have a 731 cam in my 1100 and its not as wild but still revs out to 7000
have you considered the SW5?

RE13 idle is fine, if you just speed it up a bit.
731 is not really a sparkling cam, I had one. As Vizard said in the yellow book- `lose all the bottom end, gain almost nothing at the top end'
The 3 cams I listed would beat the socks off it, and the SW5, IMO.

I have had a 731 cam when Sue's (My wifes) motor was rebuilt.
It had good pick up but since rebuilding the box and putting a RE13 it's just that much better.
Morris is a Daily drive for Sue and is a 1100+60 RE13 and a HIF44 carb.
It performs just as well as similar 1152 with a Dellorto and lighten fly wheel. Remeber this is 'my wifes car', If a RE13 was not drivable 70k's return journey each day in peak hour (Parramatta Rd) I would here about it.
If the RE13 cam was too lumpy and not drivable..I would have it out in a second.
And My final Point I have 19 month old boy and he sleeps easliy in the back of Morris

Im with Jim on this one...
Spaceboy have you actually driven the RE13 and the SW5?

I drive mine daily (except in the rain but thats a different story) and its fine... my idle is around 1200-1400rpm

Pete.

IMHO the SW5 is a great modern cam if you want more power and have to pass emission test.
i build a MPi engine with it, worked great, but you still have to modify the ECU to get the best of it. and than i can use every other cam as well.
but i have no experience with carbed engines and the SW5

the more i read here the more i feel i need a RE cam

people tend to only post how good the re-13 is, and so i rushed off to get one..
i now have one in my 1360.
i wasnt expecting the idle to be so poor, noone had mentioned that before i got one. also the power down low is non-existent..
but she pulls so much harder than before with same specs but 1310cc higher compression and a standard cam.

1200-1400 is too bloody high.. i don't want my engine idling at that speed. i'd get a headache.
heres mine
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kk6vmQ5N5gI

i would definitely recommend it for a weekend warrior, a club racer or fast road racer.

i am iffy about it in a daily.. i do a fair amount of highway work in which its fine, but in heavy traffic it is a bit of a pain

yeah i'd love to go and ride with someone who has one in their smallblock and see what its like in there.

i'm happy with the 731, but i know its an old design.

Man that sounds lumpy as! ... I like! :D imagine if put my 298deg in... dam. but noo its too big for me! maybe a 1275+ it wouldnt be soo bad.. I think I'm in the market for a RE13! :D

My cars going to be a semi-daily/hot roady. I want a really hot cam but I want there to be SOME power below 3500-4000 rpm :P

RE13 looks like it fits the bill...

The RE13 in my 1310 WITH 1.5:1 rockers came in hard before 2500. With standard rockers it will hit sooner.
I now have an RE282 in the 1360, it's on cam properly at 2900 but I can pull from 2000 at light throttle (45 Dellorto and 38mm chokes), I can still drive about in 60KMH traffic in 4th gear. 3.65 diff helps....:D

aha!

It actually climbs hills at 2500 in 4th, at 60KMH there's SFA difference between a 3.65 and a 3.44.
15.7 vs 16.1 MPH/1000
