just a quick question
as with a few other members on this forum am doing a Swift GTi motor + box into a mini
just curious which one everyone else is using
MK 1, MK 2 or MK 3?
I know that the MK 1 boxes have different mounting points and are also roumered to be stronger
so I suppose I prob should ask if anyone has managed to break there GTi box yet?

My mate where I worked had to get his box rebuilt at 100,000 km. Word was they are not that durable. His is early `new shape', so maybe MK2.

i owned a (1991) mk2 about 6 years ago. It had 90 000kms on the clock and by the time i did 120 000km it needed two gearbox rebuilds :(

It was a completely standard engine, never had it on a race track and didnt thrash it, well not every day.

Just be careful with your shifts into 2nd gear, thats where mine failed twice.

After the second rebuild ($2000 worth) a week later it got stolen

Hence why i went toyota conversion, they have proven to handle 350+hp standard :P

RS, my brief research reveals you should be focusing more on the engine that posesses the inlet manifold that will provide the most clearance around the brake and clutch M/S.

Is Animal doing a subframe for you? What are you putting it?

WS throttle body and intake's can be swapped, they just bolt on, where the gearboxes have different mounting points so you have to remake your subframe
i'm just trying to make it so I don't spend all my money on the swift motor and have the gearboxes keep breaking on me

btw Animal is not doing my subframe for me, i'm working with some people to build one to the best possible setup for a high powered turbo

Have you tried talking to Con that had a Turbo Clubbie with a GTI motor in it. He now has a Roundie with a N/A GTI motor in it and it looks sweet.

Going in a roundnose or a clubman?

Your people, can they build two? Quick smart? I want one now......gimme gimme gimme. There are plenty of swifts around, you just got to look......really hard. All the Swift boys are telling me to get as early as you can.

I can't remeber were I read this but it may just be that the early gtis are lighter and thus subject to less stress and this may be creating the misaprehension that they are less prone to breaking. Found some bloke on redlinegti forum who's fitted Yami R1 carbs to his MK1. 90hp atw he reckons. I want one now.....gimme gimme gimme.

Ok I have already contacted con
he has not had any gearbox problems with his turbo clubby
he was running a MK1 setup, wore out a box after 300k but never broke one
MK1 swifts were lighter (no power windows and some other creature comforts) and the box is pysically bigger then the others
probably easier to get in better condition as they have seen less stress

WS I have been looking for a Swift for ages now without much luck
the sooner I can get the motor the sooner I can finish the frame 8)
if you know of any let me know, has to be genuine GTi as the standards don't have main bearing supports i've been told, prefferably MK1, looking for something round the 1.5g's mark with round 180k on clock, complete or front cut not fussed but I wanna use the whole wiring harness so has to be still there, indicator stalks and the lot

180K on the clock! It'll probably need a rebuild at that sort of mileage.

I would be looking at a low km import motor instead.

Just secured mine today, $1500 for full front cut with new extractors, timing chain, water pump and a second gearbox. Nice. Tis a '88 model so front gearbox mount and better inlet manifold with less of the restrictions that were on the later model ones (eg speed controller).

If you have a contact in Adelaide, there is a wreck going up for auction tomorrow (10/12/04). Has had a nudge driver's side behind front wheel. I wouldn't doubt that this may have caused drivetrain damage (prolly crack gearbox case). Go to Pickles.com.au and do a damaged vehicle search for swift. More often that not when they post wrecks up for auction they forget to mention it's a gti so it doesn't come up when all the rice boys do their searches. I reckon you could get this for $1k, you could nearly sell all the 'bits' off it for $1k and keep what you need. All the (non gti) swift boys want the seats and the tail lights and what not. Shame it's in Adelaide.

I just spoke to a bloke ealier today (PM me for his details) who will have one on Monday for $1500 also. He will give you everything you need. I know of another one in Springwood that you will pay $1500 for also. I am not sure of what year models these are though. Worth investigating. As i said previously, they are out there you have just to look, very hard.

If you want to discuss PM me and I'll give you my number or get on MSN.

Tell wrecker/importer that you're looking for a gti motor. By the time they have stopped laughing you will gotten the impression they don't have any. That's in Bris anyway. Just like this mini forum there are GTi forums and when blokes see one at a wrecker they post it on their forum and it's gone soon after.

If you mean non gti import motor the 'real' cost of these aren't apparent until you try and buy parts, seek out help with them or go to find a wiring diagram for them. I know Brad can vouch for that!!!

i bought my complete MK1 donor car off a guy from the gold coast, for $600, the motor is fine, i put a new repco RPM clutch in it, and apart from that, it drove bloody good too!
ive got the mk1 gearbox also, the mount is underneath, i made a bracket up last week, i was jumping to make sure it was strong enough, which it definatly is, but apart from that, im lacking a bit of clearance between the subframe and the crank pulley, balancer, its only got about 3mm or so, but its got a V drive pulley on the end, with the ribbed inside pulley, i dont need the outside anyway, so im just going to remove it, and everthing should be ok i guess..

i have to make up the engine steadys, just finding the time to do it, i get home from work and its dark, :S cant do jack, but 2 weeks over christmas 8)

ive also got ample clearance from the M'S's , and about 5cm's from the bulkhead.. :)

how far are you into your conversion?

What the general opinion on overcoming the cable operated clutch on the GTI's? Most of the pics I see still have the clutch M/C so must have out a slave cyclinder somewhere right?

if that 4WD is a cultis then they are worth the money
was thinking of going that as there gearboxes are alot stronger and if you wanna go front wheel drive only then you can just blank out the rear drive but you have always got the setup there if you wanted to go 4WD
atm am sticking with the swift GTi fwd though due to money
