Post subject: | Temp Sensor problem. |
Hi all, I am having a problem with my temp sensor.. It's a 1275 and runs fine, but the end of the Temp Sensor in the head broke off, so I put a spare one that I had in. -Warm the engine up, and nothing - Temp gauge shows needle on āCā So I brought a new one.. Installed it, and the same problem occurred. When I put the original one back in (and hold the broken end on), I get a temp reading on the gauge... Now I know there are different sensors, but I cannot find any obvious markings on the old sensor to identify it. I am assured the new one I brought is the correct one for a 1275 engine.. Q: Is there something obvious that I'm missing? Q: How can I identify the sensor that was in the car (and working)? Cheers, Doc.Martin |

dont think their is a differnacebetween a 1275 and other..but it is marked..I had a quick look at mine and can't find the marking..i'm sure it's on the nut section or maybe it on the sensor that goes onside the head..But to check if one is working heat up some water in a pot and take it out to the sencer and put your IGn on...Note:not to the wire section |

I know the sensor is not working, cause I took the radiator cap off and stuck my tongue in.. and it was hotter than a cup of tea ![]() It seems to be a problem with the sensor (but I have tried 2 now). I know that gauge is working because I can get the old (broken) one to work. I need to find a way of confirming the new sensors are the correct ones.. (Anyone know how to identify a temp sensor?) Can I test the new and old ones using a multimeter and compare the results? -I'm assuming the resistance changes with the increase in temp??? |

Sensors aren't sensors. You need to be sure that it is in the correct temperature sensor for the guage or it won't give you a correct reading. There's at least a couple of different temperature coefficiencies used for temperature sensors, so you may do the same again. Standard sensors used in minis (all Austrlian models I believe?) is the GTR104. If you have an aftermarket gauge, then there may be a problem with this one if you use it. Try taking the sensor to an autospark and have him reccomend a replacement to suit the gauge you have in your car. |

Check the resistance with a multimeter at cold and at temp between the electrical connector and body, see if they are the same. Daniel |

What Gauge are you using?---> early round nose mini smiths type ,,, or late leyland mini/clubby type,,, or after market??? |

I'm using an early roundnose Cooper/S Smiths guage. The temp sensor has the Spade type conector. (Is it a black or a green single wire - can't remember) |

It is a green wire in the original loom. These gauges were fitted to deluxe/Mini K as well as the Coopers. If it works on the old sender, but doesn't work on the new sender after a straight swap, then you have the wrong sender times two. Use the part number above or keep collecting old ones off wrecks until you get it right. You should be able to pull one off an old mini and put it straight in, they don't fail very often at all. |

Do you know of a way to identify the senders (other than on a website or what is written on the box)? - A distingushing letter or mark or alike? |
