Post subject:  daihatsu charade alternator conversion

a few people have been doing this conversion on turbo minis because of the size of these altenators compared with the std lucas ones.

so thought id give it a go. My alternator came of a 89-92 G100 Daihatsu Charade 1.0L 3 cylinder and is 50amps i think. it is a Nippon Denso alternator and there are a few differnt cars that run them.

you want the smaller ones which are 100mm dia so much smaller than lucas ones :)

basically i bolted it up but found that the belt was slightly off, so 5mm was cut from the mounting bracket on the alternator (the bracket is very thick so is ok)

then was filed and belt is now straight, im using a 825mm belt which seems fine but a slighly smaller one would allow the alternator to sit closer to the block allowing more front end room.

as the brackets on this alternator are opposite the bottom bracket needs to be extented , i just welded two brackets together. Dad said maybe look in the wreckers for a longer bracket.

for the wiring , ts fairly straight forward although a wire from the igniton has to be added as the std lucas doesnt need one. I cut the wiring form the charade and joined it to the mini wiring to keep it neat. The ignition take off was from the top of the fuse box. kev seems to think that roundys are differnt , so use a test light if doing. (thanks for the wiring help kev). there is a diagram on the aternator of whats what.

finished and in place :D

~1985 Mitsubishi Magna alternator bracket.
NOTHING beats it in a mini.

It has a belt tensioner bolt to tighten it
It is long (about double standard)
Has a very good curve that should fit a roundie nicely too
Its on mine now... but I dont have a pic.

When you come over, ill show you...

EDIT: I used a Ford Laser (1987 model) 65amp alternator on mine. Its big and heavy - same as the lucas but more amps...

Pete.

I have a N15 Pulsar one on my car.

But the Daihatsu look much neater, and smaller.

A mate of mine had one is his mini too, but I didn't use it as it has 50amp and the Pulsar one is 70amp (not that I'll ever draw that much anyways).

Really need to use an original bracket that bolts to to block and run apeice of pipe to the back of the water pump bracket and run a bolt through the whole lot otherwise the aluminium water pump bracket breaks off after time due to viabration been there done that. good conversion otherwise.

Well done.
I have already done a Pulsar alternator conversion, which needed the same trimming, but I just bolted the two brackets together.

Works a treat :D

I was going to do the same with a Suzuki Swift/Barina alternator - it is the same as the Daihatsu unit

Hey Benjamin (or anyone else for that matter)

just wondering if you might be able to go in to a little more detail on the wiring side of this install? I have the same starter that has been added to my rebuild and I am about to work out the wiring so it would save me the work... plus I am likely to get it wrong!

I have seen the diagram on the alternator with the terminals marked IGN and L, I have a 74 clubman so have the Brown; brown yellow and brown blue (which i think is meant to be brown green) wires in the vicinity...

any advice is much appreciated

cheers

i think for memry brown and brown are postive terminal so to the fitting on the side, brown and colour goes to L, which is for the dash light.

you will have to add a wire for the ignition one, see above i took one from the fuse box.

hope that helps

Thanks for that! I slowly worked my brain up to it today and did some research (found a really good diagram on this website http://www.westfield-world.com/daihatsu_alternator.html)

Here's what i have done -
Solid Brown (unfused constant power) - connected it to the B terminal
Brown yellow (runs to the instrument panel) - went on L
Brown blue - doing nothing as it ran from the alternator to the solenoid same as the solid brown
then I ran a wire from the unfused side of the ignition power down and connected to the IGN terminal

so i think i have got this right but I will get a mate who is more knowledgeable in these things to pop over this week and idiot proof me!

thanks again!
