Afternoon guys and gals,

I'm wondering would it be worth it to get new rockers.

Some background:

These will be to compliment my new head (ported by Mad Matt) double valve springs, oversize valves, skimmed a bit. (12G295 head)

998 + 0.020" on the engine (now 1014cc), K&N air filters, twin HS2's and S/ST 1.75" LCB with 2" M/S zorst, standard cam.

I'm starting to work my way up to getting around to doing something now. The current rockers I have are about 1.2:1. I want to know if it would be worth it if I purchased new rockers (and shaft and adjusting screws etc as what's on there is probably shagged anyway) to get closer to 1.3:1?

What should I do?:

Would I be better off sourcing some early cooper s ones that are actually 1.3:1 or just buy some new forged ones, roller tipped or full roller rockers? Has anyone had experience with any after market rocker gear? Will the extra lift be somewhat beneficial (apart from WANK factor)?

If I go aftermarket ones I want them to fit underneath the standard rocker cover.

Cost isn't really a issue - I am not planning on selling the car (ever) so all of what I do spend I will reap the benefits of.

What should I do?

No replies ay.

Well, Imho, standard rockers are fine... IF you have enough lift with them.
You need to measure the lift. Just getting roller tipped or full roller rockers is not a gain really... unless you are lacking lift.

It also depends on the geometry in the top end. If oversize valves, or longer, etc then it might just need spacers under the rocker posts to correct.
I had bugger all lift and couldnt be arsed finding S rockers or any other for that matter that were ACTUALLY 1.24... (1.3's are not actually 1.3 in reality)

You will find that MOST rockers are closer to yours (1.2:1) than 1.3:1... if the shaft is worn, yeah replace it...

I would almost think just getting a different cam profile could do it for you...
Curious, why work the head, nice exhaust and leave stock cam?
Also, what intake are you running? Is that ported?

(I know Matt is working on the head, but will it have porting done or just better bits on it like springs, modded valves, etc)

Hope that helps a bit.

Pete.

Fitting a higher lift cam is lots cheaper than buying new hi-lift rockers...
On smallbores for the road, hi-lift (1.5:1) rockers are not a great idea, you lose too much low and midrange torque.

Because this will be driven all the time I want something that idle's nice and is sweet to drive at very low rpm - I want people to be surprised at the "power".
Also, what intake are you running? Is that ported? just the standard one that came with HS2's (can't remember the number), standard casting ATM but will be fettled with later on.

but will it have porting done or just better bits on it like springs, modded valves, etc it does have porting done and better bits

Thanks guys, looks like I'll save my pennies seeing as it isn't worth it.

P.s. Doc, I would never dream of putting 1.5's on a 998 unless i was going to race it.

Most are a bit off however the rollers are pretty on the money. I bought mine on the advice held in Vizards book and Calvers advice. True there are some rogue traders out there claiming to have the perfect set-up. Until you have your gear installed and you measure the actual lift, it is a bit of a look to the gods IMHO. My final ratio was spot on the money with a ratio of 1.29:1 - not a lot considering they were coupled to the -13 camshaft.

As for 1.5:1 on a small bore - unless you are going to rev the boobs off it, you have no real gain in them. Stick to the 1.3 MAX and a nice cam(RE-13 worked well with mine but sucked with the 1.5:1 rollers)and you will have a ball in it. Avoid the sintered rockers if you can but then I flogged mine to death and they still kept on keeping on.

The Sintered rockers are lucky to get 1.2:1 and are very inconsistent where lift is concerned - stick with the pressed steel ones as they are a little more robust and dont have so much nose over as the sintered ones do.

Weld the pressed ones IAW Vizards book and they will last forever.

Yeah - that's all in the plan - it's just taking time and money. I don't have the time and the money to do everything I want to the car. It will have a hot cam in it one day.
