Hi folks,

I have a 998 with a single 1.5" carb, wildcat 3-1 extractors, decent exhaust, the rest (afaik) completely original. The engine runs well -- good oil pressure, no real noise to speak of, not blowing smoke; all in all, a pretty solid engine.

What have people done in this kind of situation to gain increases in performance? The engine has been well looked after, so afaict it is performing at it's current peak. The difference in performance between this block and another I drive regularly (1100, twin 1.1/4 SU, lumpy cam) is considerable -- I'm looking for tips to bridge the gap.

Cheers!

turbo injected twin cam 16valve cyl head conversion should make up some of that difference :-)

sorry, couldn`t help it.

seriously tho, a bigger cyl head/valves/ports, bigger camshaft, better designed inlet manifold & a good tune after all that & you should be sweet

Hi Smegger :)

I used to own this "other car" :), and when I bought it it had a single 1-1/2" SU. The difference the twins made was pretty significant, especially further into the rev range (I'm sure the cam helped here).

What sort of gain will twins give to an otherwise-standard 998 block and head? Would you get better bang-for-buck with a decent cam and a port/polish?

My 998 still runs the standard cam. When I replaced the carb with HS2's and extractors there was a very noticable difference BUT having said that I know where you're coming from.

The way to unlock power in a A series (any engine really) is to work the head and cam. A port and polish, big valves and a high lift cam would do wonders - up the compression ratio a bit as well if you always have access to high octane fuel.

Ain't no substitute for cubic inches.
Only alternative (close) is cubic money... 8)

I'd bung an 1100 crank in, as we do.
