Adding twin carbs to 1100 considering using two standard rh float chamber su carbs apart from obvious mods to throttle & choke linkage which im sure i can overcome + heat shield + needle ect .mini has lcb otherwise fairly standard is this possible has any one given it a go am i crazy/tight but using spare su,s seems to make sense. all advice welcome ........sorry to any purist!

A lot of the aftermarket twin carb kits came with one carby and you just used your original carby as well. There is nothing wrong with it as long as you can hook the two carbs up together. I have a couple of twin kits in the shed just like that.

thanks for the positive feedback + knowledge ! can you recal from memory how they coped with choke did they rearrange the linkages or did they have two cables running into one from carb. ie like some cables ive seen on motorcycles

From memory they just used one choke (If you think about it it will work, but not as good as two)
Try one choke but if it does not work then think of something else!

On a Torana that I used to race had tripple SUs and I used to just use one choke to start it when cold.

Most cars with SUs had the same carb for each one (float bowls on the same side) It is only minis and a few others that have the float bowls on the other side.

thanks makes sense manifold does share both su s , car needs very little choke anyhow ! THANKYOU ! no spare inlet manifolds in the shed ? the word torana reminds me of crazy hand brake turns with a dash mounted h/brake release & pedal h/brake drivin like an octopus !

I had an 850 way back, with the twin SU setup you describe. To join the carbs use a piece of 5/16" rod with W-clamps. Can get from carb repair places probably.
Yes, the choke only worked on one carb but it's fast idle cam opened both throttles, of course..
Setup not as good as later LH-RH carbs & centre pull throttle- the throttle shafts get bitten by the W-clamps and make it hard to synchronise them properly. But they do work.

The Peter Manton kit (as fitted to the Sports 850) I have in the garage uses two normal Mini 1 1/4 SUs, not a matched pair like a Cooper. If it's good enough for Peter Manton, it's good enough for me! Can post pics if wanted.

The Choke problem is EASILY overcome.

Just find a 76 on Aussie Clubman and nick the Choke cable off that. It has one knob inside the car joined to TWIN cables. Originally one cable operated the choke and the other shut off soimething on the pollution gear at the same time. Works very well on twin carb installs.

The only reason I have not fitted these carbs to the van is that both carbs need a rebuild, and SU Midel quoted $75 a carb for the kit to rebuild them. :(

Brett, there are also kits available from other suppliers. Recarb do an SU kit, as they do for many other carbs.
Maybe all you really need anyway is new needle valves and seats, and main jets/connector tubes. Or are the throttle shafts worn... :?

Yeah, throttle shafts are worn.
