| Post subject: | driving lights |
Folks - am considering installing 2, maybe 4, driving lights across the front of the Cooper S. Are there any popular ways of mounting them (don't be rude  ) without having to drill into the bumper or metal behind bumper? eg is there a bar or something that can be mounted to the number plate brackets or somewhere and the lights fixed to that? What has everyone else done? Interested in your suggestions.

There are lighting bars you can get for two driving lights that simply bolt onto the existing number plate brackets. These are fairly effective as they keep the lights low and mostly out of the airflow to the motor. Here is one of the units http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Hansa-Universal- ... dZViewItem They are readily available and sturdy enough for the job One thing to do before driving lights though is to make sure your headlights are working to their potential by running relays and giving them some unresisted voltage. Thanks for your response Mr WK - along the lines of what I was thinking of, but I can't see from that how the lights will end up above the bumperbar and not be jutting out too far and get smashed by inconsiderate parkers backing into them. The search for ideas continues......... Peter.

If you want the lights under the bumper, just get a length of flatbar or angle and fit it between the numberplate and the bracket. It will protude either side of the plate, giving you something to mount the lights to. For above, there are kits made for minis to do what you want, they don't actually touch the grille so you have nothing to worry about. The downside is the cost factor.

We have had one of the two light bars on the front of the deluxe for over a year now and had no problems with the bar sticking out too far. At maximum it sticks out about 10cm in front of the bumper. Although this leaves the lights exposed the light bar provides a small amount of protection in itself. I would show a photo of the bar fitted but I have yet to work out how to post images yet. As for the lights being reversed into, it amazes me that people manage to stuff up parking enough to manage to hit a car that is only taking up half the parking space! In my opinion these are the sort of people that should have a license limited to dodgem cars.

First place that comes to mind for second hand ones is Brickworx in SA. If they don't have new ones, I think minisport SA had some on ebay at one stage. |

Thanks folks!! Have had good dealings with minisport on a couple of other items - will ask. And what do you reckon - 2 or 4?? Are there any issues with higher water temps with 4 lights cos of less air flow? Cheers

A thermo fan will take care of heat. The other thing then is to (if not already) up your alternator to a rover 65 amp or a nissan something to get the extra power to runn all those lights and fan, especially if the lights are actually used, not just ornamental.

There was brackets available once upon the time that used the bolts that held the bumper bar to the mini. They're not hard to copy, they simply formed a bracket that folded around the bumper, one for each spotty. Sorta like a closed C shape with the light being mounted on top. The real goochy ones had a hinge at the bottom that allowed the spotty to fold forward when you undid your grill. Minispares have heaps of individual type lamp mounts, but I can't find the one I'm talking about, they all seem to need to be drilled. http://www.minispares.com/SearchResults ... ty=fi&rt=1 Edit: Looking at the outer brackets in this photo: 
A variation on this bracket could be bent up to do the job. Maybe minus the rear steady or simply place a rubber vibration dampener instead of bolting it in. |

If you mean the main headlights and not the spotlights, the bosch and hella H4 lights are pretty flat faced. Can be found at most auto shops as they are a standard light for many old cars. Gives you the choice of higher rated bulbs too. I used 60w low beam/90w high beam bulbs with a relay fitted. |

the Narva replacements are good as well, also tend to be a touch cheaper. flat glassed, and i'm running 100w lows 130w highs. havent had a single issue with them at all. your looking around $100 for everything including globes. so easy conversion. everythings been covered as far as mounting the spots.. unless you got any new questions
