Post subject: | Carby, Crank Case Breather and Harmonic balancer question. |
Hi guys, I have found these 2 carbies in my pile of junk I was just curious of what they are. I noticed the bowls are on the other side so I thought they were the other half a pair but then i noticed they mount differently. Go figure ![]() Also I have 2 blocks an 1100 and a 998. The 998 has studs in the block rather than bolts to tighten the head Is this standard? The harmonic balancer on the 1100 is different too, it looks a bit beefier where as the 998 loocks just like a pully ![]() and lastly, the crankcase breather in the 1100 was crimped over and welded up. Is their a reason for this? ![]() Thanks guys |

1..two rear or left hand carbies from twin set ups 2.. standard harmonic balancer from 1100 on - if the rubber in the grove is cracked either get it rebonded at Ross Tough Balances or turf it 3.. early crank case breather - should be pointing down and on other side ie left of pic. ones I've seen/have are just crimped not welded |

Yes, the smaller SU carbs have "vertical" mounting holes & the bigger ones are offset |

The 1 1/4 has the bowl on the opposite side to the 1 1/2 so these are just the standard 1 1/4 , check the number cast on the side of them as someones (Matt68 from memory) looking for a specific numbered carb in the wanted section . |

I think we've all been there , I got a box of bits a while ago and thought I'd scored a couple of the off side 1 1/2's for making twins , then realised they had the bowl on the other side ..... |

That type of crankcase breather is not welded up on the end, it actually has a small slot (0.020") in the end of it. It is the right way up but it should be on the other hole (closer to the water pump) It is supposed to let a small measured amount of air into the engine, it is part of the crankcase ventilation system fitted to the Morris 1100. It must not be pointed down or it will leak oil out the slot. ![]() ![]() |
