Hi I have recently purchased an 1100 engine from a leyalnd. I was wondering if anyone has rebuilt one or knows what kind of work can be done to them. I want to rebuild it for my mini and i already have a 40mm Weber for it.
Any info would be great

your options are fairly wide, but basicly read up on basic tuning principles, there are three main things to concider:
* Compression
* Camshaft
*Head
good to get the compression up, then the main factors effecting output are head flow and camshaft design, you need to think about what you will be using the engine for, as this effects what cam you use.

as for head, it worthwhile thinking about using a 1300 head.

do a search, you will find heaps of info.

oh, and pick a budget, then double it :D

Mate i wouldn't bother with a webber not unless you are goin all out, the SU carby is good for over 100HP so there no point for a webber

i would prefer turbo rather then supercharger 8) 8).... just get it breathing better stick a lumpy cam in it and a 12g295 head and give a light port and polish... :wink:

Danny..get hold of a copy of The Mini Experience magazine CD-ROM or borrow the past issues that have the smallbore rebuild articles...that should answer all your questions.

What are you going to use it ofr, fast street or track?

Is going to be your day to day transport?

I'm rebuilding an 1100 8)

Not looking for a hoon machine but rather looking to optimise effeciency as best I can.

From top down - 295 head with unleaded inserts and bigger exhaust valves - chamber modified to Vizard specs.
Twin 1.25 SUs (rebuilt)
Manifold free flow extractors, RC40 exhaust
duplex timing chain
RE13 cam
balanced crank and harmonic balancer/crank/flywheel to be balanced together (haven't decided if I'll lighten the flywheel yet)
RE flat top pistons (when they arrive)
All the standard stuff
New oil pump
new water pump
new radiator
new valve guides
renew ; refurbish anything and everything that needs it :wink:

Wombat, here are 2 good reasons to lighten the flywheel-
1. Better acceleration in the lower gears.
2. It moves the crank's harmonic vibration period up the RPM scale, so less likely to crack in normal use.

I'd agree with all the above also noting what are you going to use it for but I'm guessing for a daily drive :wink:
I would not bother looking for a 295 head as they are hard to find and when you do you pay big dollars for them. I would stay with the 202 or go a 940 head instead...the 202 with a bit of work, work perfectly.
Additionaly if you have not built a mini motor before get some one who knows mini motors to do it for you.
lastley dont forget the box...its your link to goinging forward and after bilding a great new engine...you don't want to be frustrated with a chop stick in a cup

Can someone explain to me how to exactly tune the compression. Also whats needed to change the camshaft and head...is it much of a power difference, Im getting anew exhaust system so i want new a carburetor. Im thinking a weber, but i might stay with my SU carb, Im not sure if its HS2 or HS4, Its on my 1098cc engine any ideas?

Buy a book! How to modify your Mini or Tuning BL's A-series engines or Des Hamills books will all answer most of you questions.

Don't want to appear rude, but your questions are too broad!! :shock: :D :D

If a book is too dear, you can't afford to tune your Mini :?

Good point Graham!!! You'll need 100 times the price of the book for decent modifications. Not everything can be done on the cheap :cry:
