ok.... been wondering for a while now.... to stroke a 998 (with 1100 crank) what exactly is needed... obviously the 1100 crank.... for example... can i get a 998 rebuilt +20 and have the 1100 crank put in... |

Don't quote me on this, but I have a feeling the piston's are different hights, or maybe it was the rods, not sure. |

You all know I love the Bling...And as Chong Lillie has done recently it will help many others to make a thread up on what you are doing along the way....If I was building my 998 at the moment I'd make a how to thread also ![]() |

My 998 +20 (1030) has now done 1500klms since it's rebuild and now that it has loosened up it gets along quite nicely.. I fitted a 2" HS6 SU recently and that made a big improvement to the acceleration and fuel economy.. I have the old head from the original 998 and am thinking of getting it worked over to a slightly higher degree than the one that is on it now.. I have pulled just over 6000rpm in second gear and it gets to 110k/h in 3rd gear at around 5500rmp... |

so i can buy a 1100 rebuild kit from minisport..... get my 998 bored out +20 and fitted with the 1100 crank..... is that the lot to make the 998 a 1100...... and what sorta cam are we talkin about to put in..... it will be running a 1.5" su with extractors and a little tickle to the 202 aswell 6000rpm.... do they really rev that high!!!!!!!!!!! |

After running about a dozen cams in Minis, I'd suggest an RE13 takes some beating in a sporty 1098. It'll go better with a bigger carb and decent manifold.... ![]() 6000 rpm is a doddle- my old 1098 bored to 1220 with a 544 cam in, regularly hit 8500. But NO, it didn't last.... so don't try it. Consider 7000 (intermittent) the maximum for a roady. ![]() |

ok...... im off to buy a 1100 engine rebuild kit.... take my 998 block and the engine kit with a re13 etc and get the rebuild done..... i neva take my 998 past 4000... i think its gonna blow up !!!!! |

don't go buy anything yet! Seriously, you have to think about what you want the motor for first. If a Daily driver you don't want an RE13, there a pig in traffic, Even GR will take you out of it. He has other options which would be far more suitable. Going 1100 is a good idea if u can find an 1100 crank. as you are adding 100cc, but you may as well think about going a 80" oversize, as there going to be available shortly too. Before buying an engine rebuild kit, shop around, not just on the net or ebay, but call the various shops and see what there best price is, also there's no point buying a kit until you know what size bearings you need, what size thrusts etc. If your thinking about doing a rebuild yourself, stop and think. You havn't done on before and yes now is a good time to learn, but do you have anyone to teach you? If your going to have someone else build it, well, u need to get profressional that is going to give you a warrantee. Too many time's latley have i heard horror stories of motor's that have been pulled down after a back yarder as "rebuilt" it only to find a disastor. I guess what i am saying Tait, is to think it thru and don't throw all your money away by building something not suitable for what the car is for. Cheers Aaron |

The cam is the major component in an A series that determines its character, and performance or lack of. Aaron, have you actually DRIVEN an RE13 much in traffic? Particularly in 1098 and 1275 longstroke motors, they are hardly a pig. Various people on this forum run 1098s with an RE13, some commute daily right across Sydney to the airport. With their wife driving.... ![]() My advice- if sticking with a single HS4 carb for a `warm' engine then maybe do as you say, but if the cam is part of a comprehensive hot-up including head, carb(s) and exhaust system to get some serious power, an RE13 is bloody hard to beat. ![]() But it's too tame for me, my `traffic 1360' runs a prototype RE282... ![]() |

I thought 1098 and oversize pistons were a little tricky to find, or is sombody making them now? oh, and somebody is running a 2" SU on a 1030??!! (and how is that an HS6?) |
