here's some stuff that i've found out regarding legal mods in adelaide...

i'm thinking of making a nicely referenced website with linked references...n stuff

here are some of the good bits...

Vehicles manufactured prior to 1 January 1972.
No emission control requirements apart from Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) on post July 1970 vehicles.

TURBOCHARGING / SUPERCHARGING
Passenger cars manufactured prior to 1 January 1972 and passenger car derivatives (car type utilities and
panel vans) manufactured prior to 1 July 1976, fitted with petrol engines, can be fitted with a turbocharger or
supercharger without Transport SA approval.
Turbo timers are not to be fitted to vehicles manufactured on or after 1 January 1972 (ADR 25 Anti-
Theft Locks). ADR 25 requires that the normal function of the engine only occurs when the ignition
lock is in the engine on position.

Exhaust Outlets
For vehicles manufactured prior to July 1988 the requirements are not specific, however, vehicles submitted to
Transport SA will be acceptable if:-
a. The exhaust outlet exits beyond the last door or window opening on the side or rear of the vehicle;
b. The exhaust outlet is as close as possible to the outer edge of the vehicle but not outside or underneath
the vehicle;
c. The exhaust system, if contactable, is adequately shielded and any sharp or hazardous projections are
suitably treated.
Passenger cars, derivates and panel vans manufactured before 1 January 1983 the stationary noise level when
tested must not exceed 96 dB(A).

ok so it's not all positive (i think)

BRAKES
Brakes must not be altered in any way that would reduce the braking efficiency. This includes.......trim......... machining drums or discs beyond those limits set by the manufacturer.

does this mean that 9 inch hondas trimmed to 7.9 inch would be illegal?

ConvertiblesThe upper body structure or roof of a passenger car contributes significantly to the total strength of the body of a
unit construction vehicle and its removal can seriously affect structural integrity of the original design of the
vehicle.
There are no specific Regulations under the Road Traffic Act that makes it an offence to remove the roof or
upper body structure of a motor vehicle. However, in the case of passenger cars and passenger car derivatives
manufactured on or after 1st January 1969 the removal of a vehicles roof may interfere with the ADR 5A, 5B or
5/00, relating to the upper seat belt anchorages.

I would say the machining of discs refers to the thickness of the disc. I doubt the manufacturer would have any specifications for turning them into a certain diameter as that would totally gaff the stock brake setup.

You would have to read up on the regulations on running non original brakes... that's most likely where the clause would be required the setup be engineered approved.

So where does one stand with a pre 1972 car with a post 1972 engine ?

yeh , its the car build date , not the engine build date, ( is there any way wo work out the year of the engine ?

yeah... you can basically stick any engine in it as long as the co reading is below 2.5% (from memory) and as long as the new power doesn't exceed the capabilities of your brakes...

obvously the police don't have portable CO metres... but you know... if you're a P plater. they may just defect you because they feel like it

A friend had his mini in for checking after upgrading to a 1275 and that was one of the things they failed him on.

im jan 1972 so i feel pritty safe :D

But these aren't the pages you should be reading. There is only ONE book that will save you - the ADR's. And it isnt free.

All my mini's are 1963's so i have no worries...... but its a damn inconvenience to get defected...... cos it takes AGES to find a donor car for a plate swap

At the end of the day, it doesnt matter if your mods are legal or not, if the cops didnt get his donut, he'll take his anger out on your car. End of story.
