O.K.,
The saga of the 1098 bored to 1220cc with Hillman Imp pistons continues....
Emailed Ken Nelson at miniauto as per Kev's suggestion on another thread.
Short answer: Hypatec don't make Imp pistons... BUT, he has heard of engines being built using Suzuki pistons. Sounds interesting - anyone come across this.
(please don't tell me about the suzuki engine that's got suzuki pistons in it)

Ping Matt `TheMiniMan' I think he was involved in this... :P

Might be worth asking Karcraft if there is still a Hepolite listing for Imps, perhaps he can indent some from UK.

I asked them about Imp wheel cyls a while back, was no problem to get. 8)

Also try Paul Gulson on 07 55410660 or mob 0412 763229.

Thanks guys, I'll give it a go.
Let me know when you're gonna strip these imp motors Kev, this looks like my best option so far.

Ironic isn't it.
Hillman Imp was invented to beat the Mini, the Mini beat it (commercially), Imps died out, now the Imp motors give their pistons so that Mini motors can live!

Hmmm... now we gotta source some ring sets..
<edit> Where's a Rootes dealer when you need one..!

I'm running a 1098, oversize bores (50 tho?) and using Suzuki Sierra pistons.. Originally came from 'Mini and Moke World' I've been told.. The distance from the gudgeon to the top of the piston is shorter so the block has to be decked to accomodate..
Is a real little go-er of an engine though - well worth looking into.

These ones MadMin is talking about are Suzuki BIKE pistons- not sure what model.. pretty sure they're 68.0mm bore.
Somebody in Qld did it a few times.

I was at Karcraft today and asked them to check if Hepolite etc list Imp pistons still, and whether they can get them.

I also recall a guy making a few 'sports 1100' type motors at some mini place in queensland i think. He was building them with BMW motorcycle pistons (k series maybe). Motorcycle pistons tend to be lighter = better in most cases- less inertia therefore better revving and less bearing load maybe?

Yeah that's probably the same guy but I read an article on it, said they were Suzukis. 750 maybe..?

Paul Gulson.

Yeah, Paul Gulson was doing the small bore 1100/1220 suzuki bike pistoned engines & they aren`t a "bad" engine,,,but it`s still an 1100 crank in there,,,so not such a "good" thing either, i believe he`s found the error of his ways & isn`t doing them anymore,,,i think he`s doing it to 998 cranks now,,,i may be wrong tho, havn`t spoken to Paul for a little while since he moved to beaudesert,,,must throw him a line shortly & say hi... i`ll find out from him what he`s up to these days :-)

I`m doing the BMW twin cam 16v K series cyl head conversion , not fitting BMW bike pistons tho

& i have used the G13 suzuki swift gti pistons in stroker mini motors before,,,my good friend Stew has a set in his turbo chraged, stroker ,1470cc donk right now,,, :-)

so,,,just to clear up a bit of (what looked like) confusion in the ranks

:-)

I got 1 set of good 68mm Imp pistons coming tonight from my bro', the ImpMan.

Next weekend's project is to plunder his other Imp motors for more of 'em... :P

Is he called Dr Imp?

Er... no. He's been out of Imps for quite a while. Still has his original (and mint) 1965 Imp in the shed though. Surrounded by antique Imp motors...

<edit> got the pistons now but after 30+ years, they will need a good soak in diesel or whatever to free the rings.

Hope the ones still in the motors are better.
