Hi all,

Would an engine from the above mini be suitable for putting into a 1962 mini? How much modification would be involved?

TIA

Dave

Yep...no mods cept maybe driveshaft couplings :) If it is an 850 you might have to cut a hole in the floor for gearshift.

We need more info on your '62...got pictures :?:

And don't forget the different gearboxes, you'll need to cut a hole in the floor for the rod box.

it's not a big deal....
but I'll clarify what the other guys have said

assuming you have an 850 with the gearstick coming out from the floor near the firewall, the 1978 gearbox will differ in 2 ways, the type of gearchange, and the type of inner CV joint where the driveshafts connect to the gearbox.

the gearchange differs in that the gearstick is connected to the gearbox by 2 rods that run back to near the handbrake - you need to cut a hole in the floor, and make up a bracket that will support the gearstick. When the engine is in the car, you will also need to make sure that you use the engine steady from the clubman that goes from the thermostat housing to the firewall, to stop the engine rocking around too much

the other difference is the inner CV joints and driveshafts. The 850 would have large rubber crosses for CV's, and the clubman would have pot type joints. The driveshafts are actually different, so there they need to be taken from the clubman to the 850...

if your gearstick comes up from near the handbrake already, then the situation is slightly different, but the clubman gearchange will still need to be supported and the extra engine steady is required

Although I agree with fitting the radiator side engine steady bar, an 850 originally didn't have one with the magic wand...

Way back then in the 60s before that top bar was available we used to fit a lower one, to help contain the boundless 850 torque...

Actually the main torque stabiliser on an 850 was the exhaust pipe, I kid you not!

Thanks to all who responded. Unfortunately the motor I had my eye on was withdrawn from sale. Anyway, I have expanded my knowledge that bit more so I know what my options are for the future.

Thanks again to all.
