fitted a gemini starter yesterday

very easy to do too all of tem minutes to alter 8)

Man what a dfference :D

and the best part is


one less Lucas Product in the Mini 8) :D

i will bet you it doesn't last the 30 yearsw the original lucas one has and it has less power to :lol:

yeah maybe not 30 years but the parts are easier to come by :wink:

less power?? my motor now turns over twice as fast as it did previously on startup :?

please don't be fooled by how fast it spins as the power of the motor is not told by how fast but by how much load it can turn and you can still get plenty of parts and complete rebuilt starters for the 30 year old starter. If you get a high comp big bore the gem is not really up to the job for long :D

As previously stated....you can also get the original rewound with extra turns for extra grunt.

my complaint is the lucas one is too noisy, are the later rover ones compatible with the old A- engines?

If that is your biggest complaint you have little to complain about :lol: the nois3e is caused by the worn ring gear and pinion and after 30 odd years it can be fixed, not sure about Rover ones they should fit

Be careful with the Rover ones, the ring gear size changed in there somewhere...
There are a few other options:
Mini Classic in Sydney sells a Hi-power pre engaged one, it looks really shmick. $cost I'm not sure of.
MG Heritage sells a pre-engaged one too. Is around $170 I think. Mini Mad runs one in the Moke.

SOme time ago was looking at the Gemini swap and contacted GM to find out the spec for the starter. Turns out the starter (not GM made by the way, looks like they have been substituting for some time) dosent put out as much torque as the Lucas.

Looking at the stat build up the Lucas draws an extra 50amps to reach max cranking torque.

SO in summary, if your having problems starting, it's probable a shoddy charged and wired battery.

i was thinking the same thing, i thought they were for the verto clutch?

Rover mini pre-engaged = different ring gear

Gemini conversion or Heritage MG conversion = same ring gear as lucas inertia.

Heritage MG kit rocks!!

ooo that sounds good (the heritage not the gemini) - pre-engaged means no more munching on the ring gear right?
