Post subject:  NOT A CAR THIEF, car wont turn off

HI

I have a 78 panel van and the ignition barrel over time has lost its will to live

1st the click you feel when going form accessories to start etc disspeared and then one night when using my un original key that is on a keyring of substantial weight, i got home and pulled the key out and realised it was still running

i have a parts car with an ignition barrel that feels good but i cant get the thing off?

i cant see anything to untighten and i cant get the plastic end cap off.

if i am overlooking the obvious could someone enlighten me?

any help greatly apppreciated

cheers Tristan King PH 0409876216

If I remember correctly, late model steering columns with a steering lock feature had an ignition barrel clamp with fasteners that sheared-off when tightened up.

They got a little wise to thieves.

Basically have to drill them off as far as I understand. Somebody, correct me if I am wrong.

thanks

yeah, it has four bolts. Your reply sounds correct bu looking at it,

It might be possible to slide the barrel out by looking at it??

Comparing the 74 clubman to the 78 panle van, there is a slab of metal on the steering column to stop you sliding it off the top of the steering column,

The 74 has a big bit of metal wheras they had a smaller bit of metal on the 78

(refining production to save money maybe)??

The snap off headed bolts can be undone quite easily with a sharp centre punch or if you have access to a dremmel you can cut a slot in the heads and undo them with a screwdriver.

WOOHOOO

I ended up taking the outer sleeve of my parts car and puttin it into the PanelVan.

Now i can take the whole sleeve and stuffed barrel to get reconditioned.

all done, after not driving the mini for two weeks and driving a falcon and a S1 Rx7 with stuffed shocks instead, i again realise how cool mini's are.
