Post subject:  Windscreen whiper Problem!!!!

Hey All,
I have a 68 Morris mini and I restored it all n is all sweet but i have one problem that is a little scary in the rain and jus a lil bit illegal! :( My whipers dont work properly and get stuck many times when turned on during the rain.....i have been to sparkies to have them looked at n they have been fixed up as much as they can and still just dont work properly. They are very slow and get stuck very easily.
Can anyone please advise me as what i should do? where can i pick up a better windscreen whiper setup?

cheers,
Rodney aka >Rude<

A similar thing was happening to my '67 Deluxe after 37 years of service. The wiper motor was so old that if you left it on the motor would burn out because it was working so hard to move it across the screen (I had to turn it off then on letting it cool down in between strokes). I ended up taking it to some place (I can't remember where) and he ended up replacing some of the gears and greasing up the whole thing. It's now good as new!

I know you said it has been fixed but how much do you trust the technician? The guy I went to was around when my dad was a boy getting stuff fixed.

If you do trust him then I reckon be done with it and by a new one as you will probably need it!

rude,
your problem is that you have a lucas electrical system,
personaly id change the wiper motor to a newer, (2 speed one if its not already) one, and transfur the orriginal (date stamped) cover over to the new unit.

Try and find a mini specialist, go to a club meeting (if you are a member of a club) and ask the people there who to go to in that area, chances are they will know someone with the same problem and be able to point you in the right direction.

Otherwise try minisport down in SA (I think) I have delt through them a number of times in getting things to Toowoomba and they are very helpful and know there stuff. They also have a eBay store. As I'm not a local I can't really tell you where to go, there would have to be good places in Brissie but the only ones I can think of (about 2) are horrendously expensive.

<edit>I have been able to find parts through them that I havn't found anywhere else.

I had a similar problem... and as previously suggested... the tubes and wheel housings were just gunged up with decades of old grease and grime.

It's not hard to pull them apart and clean them up. A few (mucky) hours (let parts soak makes it easier) and was good as new with all original parts and a simple regrease....

yep you can try and find a used wiper motor in working condition, expect to pay up to about $75 for one that may not even park properly

or buy a new one from minisport which is pretty expensive.

I had the same prob in my clubby, but the wiper motor was fine.
I actually found that it was the start of my alternator problems (ie/ 'twas near its end)

Soon as I put in my uprated alternator, flicked the switch for wipers (I have the two speed) and WOW! They worked REALLY well.

Check your electrical, measure (or get someone to measure) how much is flowing, etc.

As mentioned though, I would make sure the wiper motor is properly assembled and greased...

Cheers,
Peter.

The whiper assembly and everything incorporated wit the whipers have been regreased and cleaned up, new whiper arms and blades were also installed on the car when it was done too......but yer is still doin the same thing. Is it possible to use a later model mini whiper motor? has anyone done it to their cars and had good results?

you've got an extra problem - I checked the photos on your website, and your car is a MK1 shell - the windscreen wipers park on the drivers side, so your car has the early type windscreen wipers with the square wiper motor. A late model, or clubman 2 speed setup will not work in it without a lot of modifications - possibly even needing you to drill another set of holes in the scuttle panel for the wheelboxes - not pretty

I had the same problem with my early model van when driving to melbourne in the rain once, I actually stopped and took the passenger side wiper off - I left it that way for the rest of the time I was using it, just the extra load of the 2nd wiper working it too hard - but it is fixable

what I suggest you do is take the wiper arms off, take the top plate off the wiper motor and disconnect the drive cable. Work the cable back and forth with your hands, it should move fairly easily, if it doesn't then get that sucker sliding like a greased pig before you think about replacing anything....

If you fit a later round type wiper motor to it (single speed or 2 speed) the wipers will do full 180* sweeps from side to the other.. like ours does
I'd stick to using early motors, unless you can fit late wheelboxes to your rack as well.
If the rack gear is all clean, maybe the motor just needs an overhaul and new brushes...

I've got a late model 2 speed in my Mk1. I swapped the gearwheel over somehow (10years ago). I also had to cut and re-flare the tube, but I think I still have the original wiper boxes. I had to drill another hole in the firewall as the 3 mounts are different. & the elec plug doesn't fit.

It may seem like alot but after getting 2 or 3 2nd hand units from MiniKing/Clinic and still not pushing the wipers in the rain I gave up on the older style, besides an engineer told me I needed 2-speed wipers to get the turbo passed.

I didn't have wipers for almost 2 years, very funny when the accounts girl from work went to lunch with me one day. It was pouring rain and she said "aren't you going to put the wipers on?", to which I replied,"it's a mini, they don't work" derrrr.

The look of horrer on her face was priceless!

then she said "wow, you're a real man... real men don't need windscreen wipers" and she was yours for evermore?
