Well, we flicked the HS2 SU and got Chong's 45 Dellorto working on his 1098 yesterday.
Carb had a few problems- someone had assembled the `choke' (fuel enrichment device) backwards, it also had 140 main jets and 200 air jets in. Had no chance of running except on full choke. :?
Chokes in this 45 carb are 34mm, maybe a little big for a pretty stocko 1098, but it runs OK now with 155 main jets and 170 air correctors.
Now, he just needs a Pulsar dizzy, and a cam, and head work, and..., and... :P

<edit> but it sounds sweet and has a new `bling' Ramflow filter too. 8)

Sounds cool.

I wouldn't mind trying one of these Dellorto carbies... what do they normal cost and are they hard to come by?

Going S/H price for a 40DHLA Dellorto is probably $100 or so, for the carb only.
Many were used on Alfas in the 70s & 80s. Weber 40DCOEs were common too.

45s are a bit scarcer and probably dearer. But a 40 is plenty for a 1098.

To fit to a Mini, you can bank on spending at least another $100 on the carb (a repair kit, 2 new emulsion tubes & change main & air corrector jets).
A Redline 3005 manifold (new) is around $160. Mine cost $100 S/H. 8)

Try one off the Alfa wreckers.. eg Manning Motors in Sydney. Must be one or 2 places up there..

What size motor?
On my modded 1310S with a 45DHLA I now run 36mm chokes, 7772.6 emulsion tubes, 40 pump jets, 50 idle jets, 160 main jets and 185 air correctors.
When I got it, it had 34 chokes, 145 mains, 180 air correctors, the rest as above. But it goes harder now!

On a 998 or 1098 with a 45DHLA, I would use 33 or 34mm chokes for the street-
Chong's stock 1098 is running 155 mains and 170 air correctors. It has 34mm chokes, 7772.5 emulsion tubes, 40 pump jets and 55 idle jets.
That will get a 998/1098 going, anyhow..

,edit> note that 7772.5 emulsion tubes are NLA. Nearest available now is a 7772.6.
40DHLAs off Alfas have either 32 or 33mm chokes in, good size for a 1098.
A 34 is the biggest recommended to run in a 40 carb.

These carbs are easier to tune than picking SU needles, IMO.. 8)

<EDIT> Personally, I would NOT fit these carbs to a stock 998/1098 motor unless you intend to modify it further. And you WILL use more fuel..

Sorry for late reply.

YES!!! it is bloody worth it! esp if you can find one for the price I got mine for! Gee she breaths so much better, much more willing to rev, more power to pull away and the sound! It's wicked!

In general she drives SO much better in traffic. More power to play with to get out of tigh situations. I can now actually drive up hill on 4th effortlessly! The dellorto has transformed my car completely! I have to learn to drive her all over again! I am now seriously thinking i need to upgrade my brakes sometime soon :(

All in all it was blardy worth every cent! Doc, your a powerhouse of knowledge and knowhow!! Champion!!! :D

Now all i need is a new cam, head work, dissy......... But seriously... I really need a tacho  :( can't hear the engine's revs over the whhharrrp sound

PS. Pics tommorrow!

Anton: mate I feel really bad not chatting to you properly on Sat. I felt Saturday was a rush for me :( Anyway next time for sure I will come around and see JAM. I wanted to know... you said you got the chrome window suround thingies by the meter, where and how much did you say again??

Anyway for sure I will come to the next MMC meeting if you are going to be there.

I pulled the motor off it this morning..
Diff pinion (3.44:1) has a toothache- coupla teeth missing.
Rest of box looks OK, but it's not apart yet. I'll pull it right down.
The motor (1152cc) is fine- and it has a 12G295 head on it, with 1275 inlet valves, and a duplex cam chain & sprockets too.
Cam is down at Russell Eng's now, getting reground.... I'll tickle the head next weekend..:P
