I know a lot of people refer to them as an "Ignition Light" but it is really a "Generator Light" or "Alternator Light" (whichever suits your car) If the light is on your alternator is not charging the battery. (or maybe something else has stuffed up ![]() |

If you have an alternator and the light starts staying on until revved, or is there but dim, it's often the 1st indication the brushes have had it. On most Lucas alternators (with the plastic cover on back) the brushes can be removed and replaced in situ, it takes about 5 mins. ![]() |

it had a new alternator about 6000miles ago. the battery is charging in between 13-14 volts, i have a in car gauge. i no if you put the power out lead into the aux plug it will stay on but thats not the case here. i might have to check the brushes. and check the output with a multi meter. cause you can never trust smiths gauges. |

Charge voltage should be 14- 14.3V if alternator is any good. Worn brushes will affect the voltage. |

i had the same issue, spoke to a sparky on the phone and he told me straight away what it was......after i spent 3 hours on my spaghetti wiring loom trying to work out what was making my battery die overnight. worst thing was when i was checking out all my wiring my g/f comes out and says "its the alternator" and i said "nah its a bosch alternator....it wouldnt do this to me" i was wrong ![]() |
