Hi all, need help!
Having trouble getting my twin Su carbs running right.
I have had them to a carb specialist twice and it runs really really rich, smokin on idle.
Is there someone that you could recommend in Melbourne Moorabbin area or alternatively is there a better solution such as weber single on a redline heated manifold?
Motor has been fully reco'd 1360cc cooper S block, standard head, (unleaded inserts)
extractors.

Webber would jusat overall be a better option as not only do they look tough the sound tough and loud and I don't know aobut tuning but twin SU's can be a pain, I know thats what I got. But they are a fairly simple carby so tuning shouldn't be too hard. The aren't like my mums old benz's stromburg carby..it was excessively innefficient, becasue the 'idle compensation valve' seal was leaking into the manifold then into the engine...super rich. Of course SU's dont have rediculoud extra features they just do their job (not too well tho... )

whatever you reckon, a properly setup SU will be as good as anything else.

obviously these professionals dont know what they're doing.. i've had plenty of experience with that.. they couldnt even tune a single hs4!

best to learn how to do it yourself like i did, thats the only way to get it done properly.

I took it to Toby at Tovan Autos, he says that theres some wear in the spindles and reckons that I'd be better off with a heated manifold and HIF??? or a Weber with an intermediate manifold.
Any recomendations as to whic way to go and probs that might occur?
Mokes are apparantly tight with regard to the firewall.

The full rebuild kit has new spindles - I'd go the rebuild but then I've done a few

What does everybody think about carby and manifold setups.
I've looked through the previous threads and ther doesnt seem to be difinitive agreement.
I've been told by three Melbourne based mini experts that I should get rid of the twin 1 1/4
SU's and put on a HIF44 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 with a heated manifold.
I'm told that these are more reliable and will give better performance than the twins.

Only one of these experts suggests a Weber 45 DCOE13, but I'm told by others that they are heavy on juice and only perform well at higher revs.

There has to be a simple answer here!

What do you guys believe to be the pros and cons for each setup and what advice do you give?

A single HIF38 (1-1/2") won't feed it...
Twin 1-1/4s are a bit small too if it's in a high state of tune...
If you want twins I'd go HS4s, 8)
if a single, go HIF44 or HS6 on a Russell Engineering manifold.

Yes a 45 Weber or Dellorto will be thirstier. But the gurgle is worth it... :P

the simplest answer is a HIF44 - they'll suit everything from a stockish 998 to a 1380cc monster - they're basically the only carb used in the UK for performance engines. What you've been told is correct

Webers are for bling and noise factor only - dyno results don't show any significant gains over a HIF44

Twin 1 1/4"s are only worth using for originality on a cooper or GT - however worn shaft holes on 1 1/4"s aren't really a big deal, they only affect the mixture at idle, and for the amount of time an engine spends idling - who cares...

What does a Graham Russel manifold cost?
Will it fit a moke?
Is it a heated manifold or is this not necessary?
