Hey Ausmini-ites I was just wondering if anyone has tried adapting an auto-choke mechanism onto either the HS2 or HS4 carbies? If not does anyone know of any cars running SU's with an auto-choke that can be adapted? or even any small auto-choke system that can be used. I only ask to see if it could be done as I am beginning to get too lazy to pull the little handle on all these cold mornings. I also believe it would be a little kinder to the engine as it would be a constant gradual cut off as the engine got warmer. I was thinking a wax-capsule or similar heat dependant device could be used to operate the existing choke linkage as I have seen this work quite effectively on old fuel injected Peugeots. The main difficulties I can see would be the mounting of any sort of unit and the adjustment. Any thoughts? Cheers |

im fairly sure there are su's out there with auto choke, i know the rover sd1 v8 has an auto choke, but its a 1 3/4 inch su, so may be a little big. im sure there will be somthing out there. |

If you want an auto choke don't buy a Mini. 
I have an Austin Montego with a HIF44 and it uses a computer to run the choke (and a couple of other things). It measures the engine temperature, ambient temperature and a few other parameters and feeds the info into a computer to operate a stepper motor to run the choke. The only problem is the computer is made by Lucas (not kidding) Most people remove the stepper motor and fit a manual choke!

An old sooby I had years ago (A Leone) simply had a solenoid that reset your choke once engine coolant got to 80. If you were holding the choke it would reef it out of you hand. Once it was over 80 degrees, the solenoid wouldn't let you pull the choke out again. |

Thanks for the input guys I have a couple of wax capsule type things from an old Peugeot. This is just a simple heat dependant lever that I shall attempt to fit on the original linkage. I'd prefer not to go with computers or solenoids as it seems like more complications than its worth. If I was going to go the electronics route, surely a simple thermistor system would be easier to manage than an entire computer system on a HIF44. I shall continue along the capsule path, if it works for the frogs it should work for the brits! |
