I have a 1977 Clubman 998cc pretty much stock I believe, and I wanted to know what mods I could do to perfromance to make it perform better.... I have been offered a 12g295 head for $350: it has new valve stem seals, polished valves and already about 80thou skimmed off it. Has been hot bathed, blasted, has double valve springs... just needs the rocker gear from my existing head. Would that be a good option? All help appreciated thanks Ian |

That head will help, but the cam is what holds 998s back. I'd bung a Graham Russell RE13 one (or similar) in while the head's off. ![]() Can be done in the car, on smallbore motors. Just need to cut one of the radiator grille slats (one end only) in the LH inner guard. Swap cam, bend the slat back down and weld it again if you want.... OK... so I've left `a few' steps out, ![]() ![]() <edit> you would want to improve the carburation and exhaust system too, if you really want it to sing. |

Go for the head! Bigger carby will help with that too as that may not be expensive and will, with bigger valves etc make a noticable difference...PS in David Vizard's How To Modify A Mini, it says not to remove the cam in that fashion as you can drop it into the gearbox...but i've done a cam removal in a car before so i'm not sure. hmmm? |

Knowing a bit about Ian's (YoungMiniac) mechanical knowhow... he will need help with both... Ian, as the good doc says, you can do heaps to a 998. The simplest mod is the head. If you want more you need cam, exhaust, carby and manifold... it all adds up. Cheers, Peter. |

Pete you are beginning to sound like me! ![]() ![]() First thing I would do is change the exhaust from extractors backwards. I would then look at putting in a 1098 12G202 head or if I could afford one, a 12G295. Then I'd change the carb to something slightly bigger. This will all add to more vroom ![]() |

He's talking about motors with the star drive oil pump, an Oz 998 doesn't have one (the 998s were all pin drive pumps here) so it can't drop in. Hmmm... apart from the Minimatic- so don't do it with those! .... ![]() |

That all depends on a couple things..... 1. what mods are currently done to the engine 2. what kinda driver you are.... (lead foot or smooth) If the engine has high compression or a hot cam, it wont be a completely easy upgrade. Either way, you'll need an oil cooler, get the ignition modified to suit, maybe an upgraded fuel pump...... just as a minimum. |

Ian, See my post in your other thread http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic ... 134#284134 Just be careful, yeah... after you tune it then see how it goes. Once you start modding you kinda keep modding and it can get $$$ Peter. |
