| Post subject: | Engine paint- Thick or Thin? |
Well, having just put three coats of paint on my engine block I'm wondering how many I should do after its had some time to settle. Should I do the minimum number for an even coverage or keep going until I'm out of paint? (well, I'll leave a bit for touch-ups) Whats the way to go here? Thanks.

minimum, if u put too much on the paint will flake easily and ur engine will run hotter believe it or not |

3 even coats is sufficient and if you want it to really look class, put 3 coats of clear over it, that will add shine as well help the longevity |

Silly question, but have you used a proper heat resistant paint? Also, three coats is already a wee bit excessive, you don't want it too thick for reasons mentioned above. Unless the car is a trailer queen and only driven on to and off a trailer a couple of times a year, don't put any more paint on it. (advice from a motor reconditioner and panel peater, given to me a few months ago.) matt |

I've used VHT 300 degree paint. I put a rediculous 10-12 hours of cleaning and surface prep into it before the paint, and have sofar only just got enough coverage to look even and not show any undesirable colours through from underneath. I'll get a gas heater onto it at the weekend in an attempt to cure it. I never intended to go thick, just checking that its not more damage and heat resistant with more layers. Thanks guys!

my 2x coats of cheap-ass Mitre 10 hammertone over etch primer is just fine after 20,000 K's of hard work.... fancy engine paint is a wank I reckon

I could believe that.... extra insulation is NOT what we're after when looking for an engine to run cool - maybe that's another reason my motors never run hot |

I painted 2 1275 motors with Mini Car Clinic's `Cooper S metallic green'. I found I got better paint adhesion by brushing it rather than spraying. 
Both blocks were prepped by wiping down with Prepsol, then wiped with thinners. Mind you, the one I spray painted got etch primed first, maybe that was a bad move.....
