Just Bought one of these babies:

For those of you playing at home it's a PVR (Personal Video Recorder) that basically records video from any A/V source (ie. Tiny Bullet Camera's located outside the car) and puts this on an internal 20Gb HDD that can record for about 22Hours of footage.

Camera Such as this:
Image

You can see what is being recorded at anytime on the screen and it has the added bennefit of doubling as a reversing camera too, you can see exactly what each camera's see's. This also allerts you when a camera moves and is looking at the ground, rather than waiting til you got home and finding out that everything you taped was useless (such is the case with recording to a MiniDV Camcorder.

Image

For you mini-nuts, you can record a cruise or track day and once over, said mini nuts can pull the unit out of the car once they all reach someones house and watch the highlights of the day on any tv that accepts AV inputs while having a coldie 8)

It also double's as an Mp3 player, picture viewer, obviously movie files, it voice records..etc..etc..

Specs here:
http://www.mobinote.net/global/product_dvxpod_eng.asp

Expecting it to arrive in the next week or two..from then i'll do a test run ASAP and post some samples up 8)

Sorry..had to post now cause i'm excited!!

Not cheap..I got mine for $480 off eBay. Mobinote sell them for US$650 + US$60 freight..

This one doesn't come up very often on eBay Australia and the most of the ones on eBay US won't ship to Oz (I asked a few) they aren't much (if any) cheaper than that anyway..

There are cheaper alternatives out there that range from $150-$1300+

like this Mustek PVR-A1:
Image

It's ok for the price if you just want something little..you need memory cards for it (only has 32Mb built in) but it only records a 320x240 (the resolution of the mobinote is 640x480 some places say a little more) and the screen is tiny..

The screen on this thing is huge:

I plan to mount it permanantly on the dash and have it all hard wired of 12V DC :) Some switches to run it all on a custom dash..should be sweet 8)

oooh NOICE.

Kinda like a digital video camera but with a remote lense.

What about audio? You'll need a mic aswell........

Those cameras, by the way, are around $200 ontop of the cost of the storage unit. I want one of those cameras for my BMW to hook up to my DVD screen........ but would prefer a slightly wide-angle-version to get a bit more of a view from it.

Too many toys, not enough spare money.

The camera's i have already include a mic:

See the little hole at top, so when you switch camera's you shuold get a different sound. In theory that is...they probably will pick up a whole heap of carckled distorted noise so i'll probably end up running a seperate powered mic from inside the car having that permanent for all camera's..

I have a few of those camera's above that were orignally bought for the basher project, but the camcorder we have is NTSC and didn't like the PAL input, so we scratched that for a bit..

They seem ok for the job, i'm going to use them to test and setup..if it turn's out good and works OK i'll probably eventually buy a couple of these:
http://www.allthings.com.au/Catalogue/Mini/bullet-c19%20sony%20ccd%20colour%20mini%20camera.html

That camera has a 2.9mm lense and about a 5m viewing angle at 3m...that's about the widest the come i think. There are other's you can switch wide angled lenses on too..

Very envious Josh...Noice

Are you going to fit it also to the Moke for Karna Days

That moke ain't going anywhere near dirt khana's

Might whack it in basher for a bit if i can isolate it from the dust and vibration..

Might bring it in the Moke when i go to melbourne to tape the Great Ocean Road and the Cruise etc..

Other than that it'll be used for little squirts on the road when i get the starlet engine in, backroads and cruises + trackdays..

The problem ive found with having a hard mounted microphone in a car, is that it will distort whenever you hit a bump, or the exhaust's sound resonates in the cabin and distorts the microphone too.

Ive taken some semi-good driving video before, only to find that it was all riuned by a poor quality microphone in a good location..

(i wonder if I could replace the mic in my digital camcorder to fix that??)

I've never mounted an external mic, but when i've mounted the camera on the back parcel shelf, we havn't gotten any distortion yet.

Have a look at some of these vids..the rodchange.gearchange one is fairly small and give you an idea of the sound..

Usually you run a good powered external mic into your camera. You shouldn't get distortion from a powered mic depending on location..Electret Mics seem to be the go here..
