| Post subject: | Cracked Transmission Case |
Anybody got any tips or tricks, do's or don'ts when it comes to repairing a crack in a transmission case. The crack that I have is inside the box, above the main shaft bearing housing. Anybody experienced with "Durafix" etc or any other suggestions? |

Yes gearbox cases can be TIG welded, but... 
If it's anywhere near a high stress area, ie in the bearing webs, I'd bin it and go find another case. Plenty of most models still about. Even if your repair is successful you may distort the bearing seats. What case are you after? (p/no number is cast into front of box) unless it's purely cosmetic, forget the epoxy etc based products, they have bugger-all strength really. |

Hi Kev Case Number A/BZ6 DAM, BC&M 4818 Main Internal web that holds the bearing for the main shaft. (Third motion shaft ball bearing) Hairline crack through metal in the most central upper bolt area. [/img] |

I have got some of that durafix stuff, it goes by a variety of names, you see it at boat shows. 
Yes you can `weld' beer cans with it, I've done it too... but it is NOT aluminium, it's a very low temp alloy. I would NOT trust it for a Mini gearbox repair, unless it's a simple crack somewhere in the outer case. If your gearbox web is cracked, even if you TIG it with proper alloy rod you will soften the material and it will be much weaker than original. It's a high stress area, yes they crack there sometimes. <ecit> Yours is an early A+ case, with the 4 bolt bearing retainer. later ones went to 3 bolt to avoid this.. I'd post an ad in wanted forum...

Rod change, A+ by those numbers. Bigger idler gear shaft than the common Oz A series rodchange. |

Hi Kev Owing to the probs associated with finding another case, which may also be suffering this problem. Are there any other cases that would be usable, eg the three bolt bearing retainer case etc. Also are there any engine parts that come close to the bearing retainer web? what I'm driving towards is it possible to weld a gusset on the top surface of this web without interfereing with moving parts etc. Regards Gavan |

Don't know lots about A+ cases, but there are 2 later ones than yours listed in my book- DAM2886 (4 bolt retainer) and the DAM5626 (3 bolt retainer). PM TheMiniMan, he may have one.
There has gotta be some A+ cases around, I'd check also with Steve at Brickworx. Conrods do go pretty close to that web..... If all else fails get it TIG welded professionally by someone who knows what they are doing, and have the housing then checked for distortion. |

i really wouldn`t weld it there,,,that`s a nice place for distortion to occur for sure!!! & obviously not the place that you`d want it to be distorted swap cases & yea, i have one but you`re miles away, try someone closer first & if you`re stuck then ring me cheers |
