OK,

as some of you will have read, i am stripping the 1275 and sending it off for balancing. The crank is freshly ground .010" under on each journal (is this the right word?).
It is from a morris 1100s, with the small journals.

What are the worthwhile mods while it is being balanced? (road car)

Wedging? 8)

What else?

Where to get it done (i live in QLD so freight to GRs might be a bitch  )?

What to expect to pay?

Cheers for any ideas!!

Matt

Talk to Matt Read "TheMiniMan" on here he is in Brisbane AFAIK mind you he might try and talk you into a stroker engine :P :D Nah, if it has small journals already you can't do that.

yeah, i don`t really bother doin much to a roady crank, quite often you won`t see or feel any difference if the rest of it is all done well, NB: "As long as the rest of the engine build is done well"

Now a race donk is another matter ,,,where you`re trying to get as much grunt out of it as possible & as much accelleration as possible, then we do a fair bit of muckin with all sorts of things all through the engine :-) but there`s some deep dark myserious magical secrets that i just can`t tell,,,otherwise i`d have to kill you :-)

You can wedge small J cranks, but they don't need it near as bad as the big J ones do. Those have bugger-all counterweighting... and weigh a friggin' ton too.
You COULD send it down to Graham Russell, he will do pretty much what Matt does, but no secrecy and he won't kill U either!

if you want to send it down to GR, I can drop it off when I make the trip to Sydney just after the Warwick race meeting 29 & 30 April. You will have to pay for freight to get it back tho.

Steve,

Just talked to GR, he's a top bloke!!!!

Yep, I'd like very much to get the short motor etc down to him when you go down. Let me know the details of when you will be here, and when you will get to GRs and so on, and I'll get it ready?

Any ideas on packing it?

Do you accept payment in beer?
Let me know what you drink and i'll provide a carton!

Cheers

OK, best if it was in pieces rather than one lump, ie, crank, rods, block, flywheel separate, for ease of moving, loading. Prefer it not to be an oily or greasy mess, so as dry as possible please, crank can be wrapped in a rag, rods & pistons in a cardboard box, same for block, flywheel.

Will be in Warwick for the race meeting on May Day weekend, 29 & 30 April, come out either day.

Plan to drop it off at GR's late Tuesday afternoon, 2 May.

My liquid currency is Guinness!

See you then.

Just a word of caution here. Some small journal 1100s cranks require heat treating/hardening after they have been reground, even as little as 0.010" undersize. Treatments could be Nitride, tuftride or tennifer process.
I presume your crank grinder knows all about this?
If you can find a Morris 1100S shop manual it gives the crank ID numbers and the heat treatment/hardening required. There are several different part Nos as it seems that BMC tried several different alloy steels each requiring a different treatment. I think they gave up after that and went for the big journal crank.

Hope this may help

Thanks Ron,

GR knows all about this, don't know about the last engine builder tho.
Hope that's not what it is

It is all coming together.... now where did I put that bank loan???
