Post subject: | Engine Change question |
Hey all. I notice a lot of minis have the 850 motor. If I were to buy one with that 850 motor, say a 1969 Mini K, could I put a larger mini motor in, like the 1100 or something easily? or is this a large job? My intention is to build the car up in terms of suspension, etc, and have another engine being built aside from the car, then drop it in at a later stage. Does this need an engineers certificate? Any help here would be great. CHeers all. |

You will find that Mini K's came with the 1100 motor as standard. As for the engineer's certificate question, it will depend what state you are in (put your location in your profile as it will make it easier for people to help you). ![]() |

comparatively very few minis came out with the 850 motor.... most were 998 if the parts you're planning on putting in a mini originally came from a mini, or are new replacements for original mini parts, then no engineers certificate is required |

Generally if you change the braking capacity to match the same specifications as what came out with certain engine sizes from the factory there should be no problems registering the car with a different engine size. Correct me if I'm wrong but 850's came out with sigle leading shoe brakes. If you were to upgrade to a 998 or 1098 then you need what 998 and 1098's came with as standard which are twin leading shoe brakes or better. 1275's came with disc brakes and therefor you need that to pass rego. Generally all of the more popular engine/gearbox combinations are interchangeable to some degree without much hassle (ie. they all have pretty much the same engine mounts and braces and do not require a huge amount of modification to fit). |
