Post subject:  Main Caps

um, how important is it to have orriginal main caps in an 1100 block? i know you cant swam 1300gt steel ones, but what about normal ones? my engine has been machined for a centre main strap, and i dont have the strap, can i just swap the machined cap for a std one from another engine? or should i just buy a strap, from what iv read, i really dont need the strap.
im finally getting my s**t together and putting this damm 1220 together....on my flat floor.

No you cannot swap main caps on smallbores either, for the same reasons.
They were line bored in situ with the block, in production.
Using another cap later is only possible if:
1. the horizontal alignment between `new' cap & block tunnel bore is very close (withins thou's)
2. material is removed from the cap and the bottom of the block, then the whole lot- block and 3 caps line bored again.
Expensive job...

For my last 1310 I made a strap from EN25 steel, and step machined it to fit the cap after the top of cap only was ground flat.

Current thinking (both GR and KC) is straps are not needed, as long as you don't change down at 8K+ and use the engine for braking....

Find a decent bit of hi-tensile steel bar and make your own. But it MUST be flat, or it's useless.
Make sure the bolts are Grade 8 or better.
Use Loctite 262 or similar on the threads, and a smear of molygrease or antiseize under the bolt heads..
Lock tabs not needed on mains- they do more harm than good.

Getting a main strap would be cheapest option by the sounds of it.
