 Post subject: Fudged Steering rack??

I have about 4mm play in the rack when I pull the wheel toward my chest, there is also noticible play side to side.
What is the best option?
* Is it something simple that has gone loose and easily fixed
* Bugger it and get a new rack
I have dreaded doing this job since ive had the car is there a trick to making the job easier?

Check that the pinch bolt at the bottom of the column is tight and the easiest way of doing it is to get someone else to do it :lol: apart from that follow the manual its not that bad really just allow a day to do it

Yeah we dont need another mini going to the grave.
Its not on the road atm I noticed the increased play in the rack after putting it back on the ground, its been on stands for the past 3 months.

i picked a new rack from minisport for around 240 i think, cant really rememba, better off fixing it that crashin

Before you do anything to serious. Theres a small bit of felt, damp with oil at the bottom of the steering column, between the column and the shroud.
When that wears out you get some movement in the steering column, sounds like what you're describing. I don't know if you get the up/down movement though.

Should be able to fix that in 30 mins for 20 cents, rather than a new rack.

Jimbo...whilst your advice may well be right in certain cases....

IT IS IMPORTANT

that Mini owners who are not mechanically savvy

err

on the side of safety

in this

IMPORTANT AREA

thats why, some of us older hands tend to recommend replacement racks and great care in the pinch bolt area....

I agree with both Mike and Jimbo.
I would check the Felt and the possible plastic one in the top, as well as the pinch bold and also the U bolts ensuing all is tight and as should be. also check the bracket to the bottom rail on the back to column.

But if in dout get some one to have a look at it for you..Mini mech that is :wink:
