i know this can be done, and i recall doing this years ago for the rears on the weekend warrior. but on the front drum hubs i'm doing up at the moment i got some taper bearings. no problem they fit in the hole, but the spacer is narrower than the ball bearing spacer. is this an issue? unlikely, but gotta ask. also what torque to do it up to? the 150 ft/lb of the cooper S discs? especially if the spacer is not matched to the shoulder width in the hub, does it overload the rollers instead of making the inner races butt up against each other? 25 ft/lb of the ball bearing standard is way too low for a taper roller bearing. what say you all? am i rambling like an idiot? michael |

Fit the rollers with the spacer they came with. Assemble and torque up to 60 lb/ft.NOT 150. The nut and thread will let go... Torque is determined by CV type, not bearing type. If they are loose when rocked, the hub centre web is worn a bit. Put dial gauge on end of shaft and measure endfloat. Then remove spacer and surface grind (.002" + endfloat) off it. Refit it- should be right. The should be a slight drag when assembled and torqued up, but it should not feel jumpy or jerky.

thanks Kev not that i can surface grind anything here at the moment.....just have to hope its all OK. if not looks like i'll have to come out and pick those rods up, . the centre web (what i referred to as the hub shoulder i guess) looked OK, nice and square without any radius or anything. did not look like the outer race had been moving at all. but without clamping the bearings down there seemed to be a lot of space between the spacer and the inner race of the bearing (if you follow). oh, and do you fit the spring ring on the inner side of the hub like in the ball bearings? what does it do anyway, i could not figure that out. michael |

Yes they have a different width spring ring, all it does is keep the seal away from the Timken inner ring. If you don't have (they are NLA I think), assemble carefully (don't knock seal right in) and it should be OK. |
