Post subject:  Plugs too hot?

Ive finally got my new motor together.
MkII 's' head, very minimal chamber work, stock valve sizes, heavy double valve springs. 73mm Hypertecs, 1100's' block, re-13.
Im not sure of the compression ratio but it seems to be fairly high as the starter only just manages to turn it over on the compression stroke.
Currently i have a set of NGK BP6ES plugs in it. When i turn it off sometimes it will fire one extra time as it turns off... minor running on kindof thing.
Im guessing the plugs im running are slightly too hot?

If you don't know what CR you have..maybe it is dieseling  :D

Next time you have the head off cc a combustion chamber and measure what your piston is doing....

Congratulations :!: Mick :D

Run on with a RE13 and high compression is a known issue. I have two engines that used to do this. The answer for my engines was to fit an anti run on valve from an escort. It works by dumping air into the manifold when the ignition is turned off. When the key is turned on a solenoid closes off a vent pipe to the manifold. When the key is off, the vent is open to the manifold and leans out the mixture stopping run on. My valve is plumbed into the power brake take off with a T piece. Without this mod on my engines I found they ran on quite a lot, and was told by a Mini mechanic there was a potential for breaking a crank. I found the gear pretty simple to install and trouble free. I understand this type of valve was also fitted to late model Cooper S's in the UK just before SPI.

Mine does this all the time. Apparently it's not run on, it's run backwards  and it's not the plugs it's the head being red hot that causes the combustion?

Clutch, throw it into first, turn off ignition and just when it's about to die, get off the clutch.

That's it!

I have found that if the car is idleing to fast that it will run on as well. also use 98 Octane fuel only

Ive set the idle at 1100rpm, not really fast considering, plus any lower makes the weber vibrate like hell. I always use 98 RON also. Maybe i could just richen the idle mix slightly.

I have my Idle set to 700

Idle too slow, & you can scuff the cam and followers. Mine idle at 1100-1200.
The 1293 doesn't ever run on, but its C/R is only 9.4:1.
The 1360 does, but it's running at 10.7:1. I just stall the sucker. No, it doesn't ping... 8)

A cheaper way to stop it running on is to floor the throttle as you turn it off. Does exactly the same thing vents the manifold to atmosphere.

Works with an SU. Not a great idea with a 40-45 Dellorto or Weber, it squirts a big slug of fuel then.

minis are supposed to idle low, mine (altho 998) idles at 900, seems to be inbetween wat everyone else is doing, and only runs on after a long long drive or after i rag it

Dad has had his 1310 Engine built for a good ten years and is driven everday to work. About 15 to 20 thousand k's a year and it idles at 700 and has not a once of trouble with it.

Yeah a 1310 will idle at 700 if the cam is not too mad... mine did too.
No way my 1360 will now. Too cammy. But is does have around 125HP at crank... 8)

Post subject:  Flywheel

Not to mention whether any engine has had some beef taken off its flywheel...no matter what cam profile is used if its been lightened then low speed idle will be effected and made a little more difficult  :D
