Post subject: | choke questions |
i am pretty unaware of the whole choke thing, i've heard that aparently without the choke in u cant really start a mini? and my choke thing is pretty screwed so i've just left it as is and my mini starts just fine. so maybe my choke is in all the time yes? is it bad to have the choke in all the time? what will it do, does it make the fuel run too rich and the car not go as fast or rev as high or anythin silly? am i a stupid kid? HA ![]() |

Choke is uasually used on cold mornings when it's hard to start the car. What it does is "choke's" the air supply and lets more petrol into the cylinders. You don't really need a choke, just hold the throttle pedal down about 1cm and it should start fine. Mine hasn't been connected in ages. If yours is starting without the choke it could mean the mixture setting is a bit rich. If everything is running fine I'd just leave it. But if you set your mixture a bit leaner you may need to use the choke. What carbs are you using? |

Giving an SU a 'pump' will do zip squat ![]() ![]() If in winter you find you can't start it, it'll be nigh on impossible without a choke. Summer i would not expect many troubles starting, especially if a little rich. |

Giving it a pump won't do much, but holding it open slightly will help. |

im not saying i have troubles starting it, it starts first time every time, the "pump" (well a little bit of accelerator and then slight pressure) does help get it goin, or atleast helps it stop from losing revs and dieing. just wondering if it could be doing any damage IF its in, cause i cant go check now cause its late and i'll wake everyone up. thanks 4 ur help. |

I usually would say choke being IN is choke 'off' ie. normal driving position. You pull the choke OUT to start and when it's cold for a bit. I don't think you would do any damage if it was on (making the mixture rich) all the time, only thing i can see is an excess consumption of fuel, incorrect mixture and maybe having too much fuel could wash the oil of the pistons/cylinder walls.. |
