| Post subject: | 7.5" Cooper Brakes & Boosters |
Brakes are now mine. 
Ive been reading that most people seem to run brake boosters.....i know kazjim doesnt though, and his mini pulls up great with a turbo. Is a brake booster a must with 7.5" discs ? or is it just optional for that extra bit of braking power ? Is it worth the extra $$$ to get one ? |

A brake booster will not increase the braking power available, just require you to put less effort in to make em work. Personal preference, but I don't run one. |

As Damo just said , a brake booster will only make the pedal easier to push , much like a modern car with vacuum assisted brakes . Without it you'll have a similar pedal feel to the drum brakes , a bit heavier but still works more the harder you push it . Most people fit boosters because the Cooper S had the booster standard with the disc brakes so it makes sense if you're using the disc's to use the booster . If you don't mind a heavier peddal then don't worry about the booster and save a bit of cash . |

So the result is that you can lock your wheels quicker with a booster!

I can lock the fronts on Barney's 7.5s (using EBC Blackstuff pads) without a booster, so we never fitted one. I never bothered with one on Ha-Ha either, running Greenstuffs- it stops fine. If I ever DO fit one, it'll be under the dash.. standard mounting spot is not available to me with Minimatic heaters on both cars.

Okay, maybe I should have phrased it better... ...a locked wheel is a locked wheel. If you can lock them up easily without a booster, the brakes on the locked wheel are not going to get any more effective with extra pressure in the line. On a side note: Why so keen on locking them up quickly? Wasn't ABS invented because you can theoretically stop quicker if you don't lock them up? Personally, I run slotted rotors, EBC greenstuff pads, braided brake lines, finned alloy rear spacer drums all with no booster. One is a 7.5" setup on a 66 van, the other a 8.4" on an 80 Moke. I can pound them all day - unreal.

I personally like the booster..as long as everything else is in good working order and it isn't being put on to make up for any inadequacies i find the feel good and easy to modulate... |

I dont run a booster on my disk braked mini either they work fine with just ordinary pedal pressures and you quickly adjust to how hard to stand on the pedal. Do, however, fit the 5/8" cooper S type rear wheel cylinders otherwise the first time you really need to stand on the brakes in the wet you may end up piroquetting down the road. |

I don't run one, it's fine. My right leg is strong so I have no difficulties stomping. I find there is more control without a booster (not that I have driven a boosted mini at length, just a regular car ie. holden, toyotas etc). I found it hard to heal toe on Josh's boosted brakes but then again i didn't drive it for very long... |

I have a congenital muscle disease (which inhibits muscle growth) and even with my weak twiggy little legs i can stop my car without a booster. If i'm going at a great speed i can't lock the wheels up easily but it's possible and would be easier for a normal person to do. I'm running non-boosted 8.4" discs up front with cooper s spacer drums on the rear. |

Run the booster, thats how it was designed to run and just maybe the original designer knew a bit more than all the hairy chested men who claim its easy to drive without a booster as for claims about more feel that is crap as a normal mini designed with discs has tons of feel, its nothing like a modern car that has no feel but a well weighted pedal.

Im gonna try it with no booster atm. I have no desire to lock the brakes up anyways. I have been driving around on rather dangerous Drum brakes for the past 8 months....ask Kazjim....so anything that is better than a drum brake system with a leaking master cylinder is fine with me
