Post subject:  Auto subframe with manuel gearbox
I have recently purchased a 1970 Mini Matic rolling shell without an engine (previous owner had a manuel in it) as it was stuffed.
Now I'd like to get this nice Mini back on the road so I used an old rebuilt 1100 that I had laying around and put this on top of the manuel gearbox supplied.
I've been stuffing around with Minis for only 20 years and I've never put a manuel gearbox into a matic.
The subframe is way wider than a manuel subframe. This would explain the spacers behind the engine mounts? (that are not big enough!)
Also I found on the passenger side two more holes drilled in the subframe to try and get the engine to sit square!?
Yes this in on top of some very sus missing 7/16th bolts of the top arms.
Now I wish I just through in my manuel subby!!!
This car looks good but by christ I've found some dodgey crap.

Been there , done that , ended up replacing the subframe altogether . You can supposedly fit spacers to it to get it to go right but it still never seemed right . Much easier to just replace the subframe .

According to KC all that you need is 2x 3/8" thick spacers. I can't remember whether they go on the mounts or under them.
Also another hole is needed in the passenger's side of subframe, to take the manual mount. Different bolt spacing...

Yeah, what the Doc says. The spacers go between the subframe and mounts, not the engine and mounts.

Sorry no pic...
It is pretty much like a manual one, except the front rail a bit different cross section & is curved forwards a lot in the middle to clear the auto's valve chest cover.
Also I think they are a little wider- ie stick out more each side, maybe.

I noted TK said they were a bit wider, I thought that might make them a good choice for engine swaps. Then again the sides are cut away all together in most swaps, so it probably doesnt make any difference.

Yes, I've said that about 10 times on this forum before! :roll:

Some pics of the Auto subframe in my Moke. You can clearly the different shape at the front and the extra siffening below the front panel. It's hard to spot, but it's actually about 1/2" to 3/4" wider between the sides than a manual one also.
