Although it is possible to cut the flange of an 1 3/4" SU to look like an 1 1/2" it's unlikely to be an 1 3/4" . The easiest way is an 1 1/4" has the two bolt holes on the flange that bolt it to the manifold lining up vertically , the 1 1/2" has them on a 45 degree angle . Bit hard to explain but look at where the carb bolts to the manifold and you'll see what I mean .

As to whether you'll be happy with it , unknown . $600 for the webber sounds a bit pricey though , I'm hoping that's installed by someone and tuned up properly ..... Personally I'm not a real big fan of webber's and would prefer twin SU's , but each to their own . Twins are a little more fussy to get tuned and keep tuned spot on , but webbers seem to be better suited to dumping huge amounts of fuel into the motor quickly . An SU has a more even fuel to air delivery ratio than a webber and when set up properly are brilliant .
